Very few issues divide dog lovers as much as the question of whether or not breeding is something that should be done.
On one hand you have the so called pure breed enthusiasts who would not even consider anything other than a pedigree dog. On the other hand you have people screaming and yelling to stop all breeding altogether.
Both positions are equally wrong.
There was a time when breeding dogs was not about looks but about talent. Man needed dogs that could perform a certain task better than any other animal on earth. The original philosophy of dog breeding was “form follows function”.
That in fact is 100 percent correct. Let’s say you wanted breed a dog with more power then you breed the most powerful males to the most powerful females. If you keep doing this then inevitably the dogs will start to look more and more muscular… “Form follows function”.
When doggie beauty pageants became all the rage the opposite philosophy reared it’s ugly head the first time… “Function follows form”.
This is, of course, completely ridiculous. People literally sat down and said: “What do we want this breed to look like?”
So then they decided to create these ridiculous standards which make no sense to anyone who truly understands dogs. The result was that sheep herding dogs who had been bred previously to be superior herders now could not herd anymore… Guard dogs could not guard anymore and so on…
The bulldog is a breed that used to have the ability to hold its own against a 2000 pound bull. I do not condone the atrocity of bull baiting. I am just trying to point out that doing battle with a 2,000 pound behemoth is a pretty severe test for a 60 pound animal. A challenge that can only be met by a dog that is 100 percent healthy, extremely powerful, athletic and brave beyond compare…
The bulldog of old was all of these things and more.
The AKC and the Kennel Club have taken this magnificent breed and reduced it to a fragile creature which is not able to breed without help, give birth naturally, run for more than a minute or even breathe without immense effort. This just breaks my heart. We took a superior warrior and completely healthy dog and turned it into a science experiment to see how many health issues can a dog have and still walk around this earth for a while.
There are those who believe that the wolf is the superior K9 and canis familiaris is nothing but a mistake man should have never made.
I will use certain breeds and their particular talents to illustrate what, without taking anything from the wolf at all, the dog is often much more than the equal to the wolf.
Canis familiaris has been specialized by man in order to make a particular breed superior to the wolf at a particular and SINGULAR task.

The greyhound is faster than the wolf…
The bloodhound has a better nose than the wolf…
The mastiff is more powerful than the wolf and so on…
The all around best survivor is the wolf but if he has to compete with “specialists” at any given task he is simply out of his league.
In closing…
If the right kind of breeding can produce dogs with talents that put all other animals to shame then I am all for it.
If beauty pageant breeding produces sad cripples just so people can marvel at their own “creations” regardless of what level of suffering this causes the dog, then it needs to stop.

Let us demand breeders to go back to the old breeding philosophy…

Rovy My Caucasian Ovcharka/ Mastiff with Sophia Central Asian Shepherd and Rhea mastiff x rottie i certainly have my hands full. All the dogs are enjoying a day out in local park. Beware many Ovcharka are not as social as this but its good to see they are dogs like any other deep down and social . This was taken late june 11 at this point we had opwned Rov for 3 months and what a fantastic CO he is proving to be. 2nd to non as a gaurd dog willing and able to fiend of a threat at 8 months a dog not to be messed with or underestimated as could easly be the case judging him in this one video. Far as i’m concerned you have to experiance many situations with a dog, social and of a gaurding nature to get full reliable picture of a dogs traits. Any good CO could leap to the end of a lead toward a man with a sleeve but its very limited information. I like to know how they react to strange stimulia what calming signals they use how quickly they recover from stress to get a full picture of what a dog has. Rovy is proving to have a very solid nerves in one my video you can see him walk up to huge jcb digger as if it was not there,,in the coming months i will put together a number of videos based on the respected MH temprement test for working dogs in sweden .

We can learn from history books that the Rottweiler was considered a close friend of man, since the time Romans started to breed it as protection for their livestock and other properties. The Romans were the first to use these dogs to heard their cattle and later learned other people, like the German peasants who were great owners of cattle to use Rottweilers in the same purpose. The ferocious nature and instinct for herding of this dog originates from these times when these dogs were supposed to fight against wolves, thieves and other similar dangers, which required that they be decisive, confident and fierce.

They are powerful dogs and stoic in their demeanor, with a strong body and a head as big as a mastiff, so many believe they originated from mastiff genes. Only the people having an assertive personality and that like to be active all long day can master such strong animal, after they earned its respect as its leader.

The Rottweiler training will not be a short 2-3 months course, but up to two years until it matures during which you will need to be at its beck and call watching it, correcting it, loving, enforcing the ‘who-is-the-boss’ rules in the home. If you are not up to it, then the Rottweiler is not the dog for you.

Personality Is Quiet And Observant

The personality of the Rottie is that of a very serious and stoic observance and they are normally calm, fearless, and self-assured. They are not barking dogs but a Rottweiler will normally bark when he is annoyed at its surroundings, rather than at a person. They are permanently checking their status within the pack and submit only to those they consider superior.

They can be extremely aggressive with strangers and this is why they should be well socialized right from their puppy stage. You must train it obedience before becoming full grown.

It is a dog willing to learn all its life and a great companion. They are the in fact the happiest, when they feel useful. Rottweilers love to do things for their masters and thrive on the feeling that they are needed. They need lots of exercise, daily – and this includes both mental and physical types with the mental exercises mostly covering obedience and agility, while the physical exercises would involve interactive play and running bouts. The lack of exercise means a bored dog that will chew everything in your house and its temper wil become grouchy.

Most of the people recommend a female to a male Rottweiler as an ideal pet because she is easier to handle and train and they are smaller and easier to control physically as well. However, the female can get very edgy during mating season and whelping time, otherwise, she is much more affectionate than her counterpart.

The main features that allowed them to survive during their herding period is their natural ferocity and the attachement to master, whom they have fight aside against either animal or human predators. Hence, their dominant attitude and aggressive temperament made them the best choice dogs at that time and the reinforcement of those traits over a couple of centuries have made the Rottweiler dog what we have today.
