Puppy Training - Viewer Q&A

THIS IS AWESOME! My favorite dog trainer and dog whisperer of all time has just released a free video online explaining how to eliminate 94% of all unwanted behavior in ANY dog. Her name is Krista Cantrell and I absolutely LOVE the way she teaches. Click on the video to watch. You'll be glad you did...

The second episode in the series where I take the most popular questions that I receive and answer them in a video. I have several tutorials on cues that puppies should be taught and they address a lot of questions not answered in this video. I recently organised them all into one playlist, found here:

A BIG thanks to everyone that subscribes, comments, favorites & likes my videos. It is this positive support that motivates me to make more. If you have sent me a message and I haven’t replied back yet, I will try my best to catch up and respond as soon as possible. Thank you for being patient!

A popular concern new dog owners have is “where to start” when they bring their puppy/dog home. The best place to begin is usually with something relatively simple so the dog-parent can learn to work together as a team and understand the principles of positive reinforcement. Regardless of what you may choose to work on first, teaching basic obedience serves multiple purposes and is typically considered very important.

As demonstrated in this video, by approaching the task with a ‘no-fail’ strategy, there is no chance of failure and the dog is guaranteed to succeed. As simple as it may seem, pay careful attention to the order of steps shown in this tutorial. The goal of all training must be to motivate and engage the dog by creating an atmosphere of fun. A dog shouldn’t ever be forced to do anything - and if trained properly - will never need to be.

dispelling myths on dog training

Dispelling the myth that a dog trained without the use of physical and psychological intimidation won’t listen if he is chasing prey.

What is not shown in this video is that Splash only chases prey on cue, she never does it without being cued- as I have put chasing prey under stimulus control.

All my dogs are only trained using Progressive Reinforcement Training.

Training high drive dogs- clicker dog training

The dogs featured in this video belong to my friend youtube user: alomaro

There is a myth going around that is not founded in science, but is mere opinion, that high drive dogs need to be physically and psychologically intimidated in order to be trained. By using Progressive Reinforcement Training which involves no forms of physical or psychological intimidation, you can train high drive dogs the right level of arousal as well as reliable behaviors, and how to be friendly and calm around other dogs and people.

To learn exactly what Progressive Reinforcement is go here:
http://www.dogmantics.com/Dogmantics/Progressive_Reinforcement_Manifesto.html

The Need for a New Term:

A type of animal training exists that involves no forms of intimidation, confrontation, violence, reprimands, or domination.

This non-violent type of training has gone under many names: “Clicker Training,” “Positive Training,” “Positive Reinforcement Training,” and “Reward Training,” among others. There is a need for a more specific, more accurate, more inspirational term. The above terms have been used so loosely in recent years that they have lost their original meanings. How has this happened? Trainers who use compulsion methods may incorporate a clicker (a noise maker to mark desirable behavior) and refer to themselves as a “Clicker Trainers.” Trainers who use painful or intimidating methods may include food or toy rewards in their training and refer to themselves as “Reward Trainers” or “Positive Reinforcement Trainers.” It is already possible that a member of the public may seek the guidance of a trainer who claims to be “Positive,” only to find out that this trainer routinely uses physical violence towards animals.

Progressive Reinforcement Training is a training system that is not only humane, compassionate, and reliable, but is also based on the latest scientific studies. Because this form of training constantly incorporates the latest and most reliable scientific findings, and because it furthers an evolutionary progress toward a more harmonious relationship between humans and the animals who live with them, it shall be referred to as Progressive Reinforcement Training.

Progressive Reinforcement Training essentially means teaching animals by rewarding desired behaviors and excluding the intentional use of physical or psychological intimidation.

How to train any puppy!!!

In this video, I address some of the most popular questions regarding puppy training. When should you start training a puppy? How do you teach a dog to want to be obedient? How to establish good habits, eliminate behavior problems and some house-training basics.

The key is to set your dog up to be successful without even giving them a chance to do the wrong thing. Puppies are curious and energetic which combined, may cause them to learn inappropriate behaviors. But if we actively supervise them and manage the environment, then they will quickly develop into well mannered members of your family.

A positive attitude is the most significant tool when bonding with a puppy. By adding or removing positive reinforcement (whether it is attention, or food) we can effectively curb, guide & nurture behavior.

Thanks for watching & subscribing!

***New video will be up later this week!***

I have been working on so many things with Twix, but today we worked on him jumping over my back. However, I am not lifting up too much as he is still a puppy! I just want him to learn the basics and as he gets older he will be able to jump higher. He is such a natural and loves anything that involves a frisbee. :)

Enjoy!

Take care everyone!

Dog Training Tutorial- HOUSETRAINING

House-training is often the first thing most dogs need to learn as they become part of a new family. Since this is something I have been getting numerous requests for - I decided to do a video on it.

There is some additional information on housetraining (tips) that I did not include in the video which is available on my Facebook page under the discussions section.

***NOTE***
All this information assumes that the dog in question is in good health and not suffering from any sickness/disease. Sometimes lack of bladder and bowel control is a result of ill health and if you suspect that this might be the case with your dog, please immediately consult your vet to rule out any such possibility.

It is also assumed that the dog is not struggling with fear-based elimination. As is often the case with some dogs, the goal in these instances would be to tackle the issue of fear/anxiety in addition to following all the advice given in the video. Unfortunately, the details in these situations are specific and unique to the dog - so the best approach is to contact a professional dog trainer who uses positive reinforcement only, to assess and determine the most appropriate course of action.
