Puppy Training

THIS IS AWESOME! My favorite dog trainer and dog whisperer of all time has just released a free video online explaining how to eliminate 94% of all unwanted behavior in ANY dog. Her name is Krista Cantrell and I absolutely LOVE the way she teaches. Click on the video to watch. You'll be glad you did...

Puppy trainiing is always exciting and can be very interesting as well. This is a 9 wk old Belgian Malinois puppy named ‘Simon’ that is owned by Dave Skoletsky of Sit Means Sit Dog Training and he is having fun retrieving a hula hoop in this video.

How crucial is the gender of a dog when choosing a pet?  Will the gender of your new puppy make a difference when it comes to training?  It depends upon what you are wanting when choosing a dog. Both male and female dogs will make wonderful pets and probably the most important aspect of choosing a puppy is not the gender but rather the personality of the dog and how it responds to you and your family.

The temperament, the level of required care and the size of the breed are far more important considerations when choosing a puppy than the gender of the dog.  Males and females have different personality attributes but either can be well trained and both can make wonderful pets. For more information about dog obedience training and where you can get dog training videos online that will show you step-by-step every thing you need to know.

If you are getting a dog just for a pet and not for breeding reasons it is crucial to get your dog spayed or neutered.  If you do not get your female dog spayed you will have to deal with the mess of her going into heat every so often.  If you do not get your male dog neutered you will have to restrain him and make sure that he does not go out roaming to find female dogs that are in heat.  Breeding dogs is a big responsibility that encompasses more than just adorable litters of puppies every so often.  Spaying and neutering is the wise thing to do for the ordinary pet owner.

Male dogs are often believed to be more territorial and therefore better watchdogs.  Females are usually a bit smaller in stature but are thought to have more loving and warmer temperaments.  Families with young children may consider a female dog because of the maternal instincts of a female or they may choose a male because of the increased energy and endurance to play.  It is an individual decision depending upon what you are looking for in a pet.

However, it is smart to consider that all of these characterizations are just generalizations. Female dogs can be great watchdogs and male dogs can be loving companions.  Dogs exhibit their own personalities and what is important is how they mesh into your family.

There are some traits that are more dominant within a certain gender but dogs of the other gender will sometimes exhibit those same traits.  For example, male dogs tend to mark their territories but a female will also mark territory at different times.  Female dogs tend to be a bit more independent but a male dog can also show this trait.

It is believed that female dogs are a bit simpler to housetrain because they do not mark territory as frequently.  Male dogs are often chosen for police work because of their increased endurance.  If you are looking for something specific it may make sense to choose a dog based upon gender but if you are just wanting a wonderful pet, it would be better to choose a pleasing personality that meshes with your family rather than a male or a female.

Puppies bring their own challenges whether they are male or female and both genders can make wonderful and loving pets.  Choose a puppy to become part of your family rather than basing a decision upon gender.

Busy & Zoom 2009 - 2) - Puppies Are 3 Hours Old
On July 1st 2009 Busy and Zoom have a litter of 11 puppies. It is a good size litter. There are 6 girls and 5 boys. When the labor starts, I find it normal to have a puppy an hour. There are times when you get 2 close together, but then you have a long time before the next one arrives. You must watch closely for any signs that the female may be in trouble. There could be a baby that has turned sidewise and is blocking the others from being born. If she is doing a lot of straining, more than likely, that next puppy will be born die. The birthing process can be very long. If you have 9 puppies it can take up to 9 hours for all of them to be born. Of course, you won’t know how many are in there, so you will be watching for maybe 11 to 12 hours. I always take my mothers to the vet, when I think they are done and get an x-ray, to be sure everyone has been born. I also get my puppies check out at that time too.
We are back home from the vet and I have settled Busy into the whelping box. I’m keeping the puppies in a warming box so they stay warm and so she won’t step on them. Once Busy is comfortable I start introducing the puppies to her. I take 3 puppies at a time and place them next to her. She will start licking and cleaning the puppies. Busy is an experienced mother. She knows how to clean and stimulate the puppies. Just in case you don’t know, puppies don’t go to the bathroom on their own at birth. They have to be stimulated to do so. She is doing a great job of cleaning them. Her milk came in by Thursday morning. I make sure each puppy is cleaned up and is nursing. Sometimes the mothers milk has not come in yet, but the puppies should still nurse. I kept adding puppies until I have 1/2 of the litter with the mother or about 5 or 6 puppies. I wait until the puppies in the warming box start fussing or about 2 hours and then I rotate the other half of the litter with the mother. I keep doing this until the mother indicates that she wants all of the puppies with her. When I put all of the puppies with the mother I watch very carefully to be sure that she doesn’t step on a puppy or roll on a puppy. This is a common way to loose a puppy. If you look closely at the whelping box, you will see that there is a railing on the inside that stops the mother from laying up against the side. This is called a pig railing and provides a place for the puppy to be, so the mother won’t lay on it. The puppies weigh about 10 to 16 oz.
For the next 5 to 7 days I sleep next to the whelping box where I can hear the puppies, again listening for a puppy that is being squished. I watch that the smallest puppies is always close to the mother and that it is nursing. Sleeping next to the litter, I’m right there when the mother wants to go outside. I always pick up the puppies and put them in the warming box, when she gets up and starts moving around.
When you deliver the puppies you tie off the umbilical cord before you cut it. I have the vet replace it with a surgical staple. You can see this staple in the video and how the cord is drying up.
You can tell if the puppies are warm enough by watching to see if they are spread out away from the mother. If they are all huddle around and under the mother your room is too cold.
When the puppies are eating their little tails are going like mad. Happy little tails. Golden Retrievers come in all different shades of gold. They go from light to dark.
Busy finds a different way of nursing her puppies. She doesn’t have to lie down.
The mother registered name is Spirit’s Busy B N Me and the fathers name is OTCH Spirit’s Zim Zam Zoom (the #1 All Breed Dog in Canada for 2008)

Golden Retriever

“The Golden Retriever is a large breed of dog, historically developed as a gundog to retrieve shot waterfowl and upland game during hunting. As such they were bred to have a soft mouth to retrieve game undamaged and an instinctive love of water. Their versatility sees them employed in a variety of roles including illegal drug detection, search and rescue, as hunting dogs and as guide dogs. Its friendly, eager-to-please nature and patient demeanor has also made it one of the most popular family dogs (by registration) in the world today.

History
———-

The Golden Retriever breed was originally developed in Scotland at “Guisachan” near Glen Affric, the highland estate of Sir Dudley Marjoribanks (pronounced “Marʒbanks”), later Baron Tweedmouth. For many years, there was controversy over which breeds were originally crossed. In 1952, the publication of Majoribanks’ breeding records from 1835 to 1890 dispelled the myth concerning the purchase of a whole troupe of Russian sheepdogs from a visiting circus.

Improvements in guns during the 1800s resulted in more fowl being downed during hunts at greater distances and over increasingly difficult terrain. This led to more birds being lost in the field. Because of this improvement in firearms, a need for a specialist retriever arose as training setter and pointer breeds in retrieval was found to be ineffective. Thus work began on the breeding of the Golden Retriever to fill this role.

The original cross was of a yellow-colored Retriever, Nous, with a Tweed Water Spaniel female dog, Belle. The Tweed Water Spaniel is now extinct but was then common in the border country. Majoribanks had purchased Nous in 1865 from an unregistered litter of otherwise black wavy-coated retriever pups. In 1868, this cross produced a litter that included four pups; these four became the basis of a breeding program which included the Irish Setter, the sandy-colored Bloodhound, the St. John’s Water Dog of Newfoundland, and two more wavy-coated black Retrievers. The bloodline was also inbred and selected for trueness to Majoribanks’ idea of the ultimate hunting dog. His vision included a more vigorous and powerful dog than previous retrievers, one that would still be gentle and trainable. Russian sheepdogs are not mentioned in these records, nor are any other working dog breeds. The ancestry of the Golden Retriever is all sporting dogs, in line with Majoribanks’ goals.

Golden Retrievers were first accepted for registration by the The Kennel Club of England in 1903, as Flat Coats - Golden. They were first exhibited in 1908, and in 1911 were recognized as a breed described as Retriever (Golden and Yellow). In 1913, the Golden Retriever Club was founded. The breed name was officially changed to Golden Retriever in 1920.

The Honorable Archie Majoribanks took a Golden Retriever to Canada in 1881, and registered Lady with the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1894. These are the first records of the breed in these two countries. The breed was first registered in Canada in 1927, and the Golden Retriever Club of Ontario, now the Golden Retriever Club of Canada, was formed in 1958. The co-founders of the GRCC were Cliff Drysdale an Englishman who had brought over an English Golden and Jutta Baker, daughter in law of Louis Baker who owned Northland Kennels, possibly Canada’s first kennel dedicated to Goldens. The AKC recognized the breed in 1925, and in 1938 the Golden Retriever Club of America was formed.”

Stop Your Dog From Barking Excessively

All dogs bark sometimes.  It is their primary mode of communication but when a dog barks excessively it is annoying for everyone.  Some breeds bark more than others but all dogs bark at times.

Dogs will bark excessively for a variety of reasons.  If your dog spends the entire day in the house or in the same yard he may start barking excessively because he is bored. Dogs love exercise and interacting with people.  Dogs also love social stimulation, as they are pack animals.  If your dog is barking out of boredom try taking more walks or incorporating more playtimes throughout the day

Being overly nervous or scared can also prompt a dog to start barking excessively.  Appropriately socialized dogs tend to be calmer and more relaxed around various people and in different situations but a dog that is not used to new things may start barking out of anxiety.  Start socializing your dog by taking him to new and different places and into new situations.  Offer him praise and rewards when he is quiet and well behaved and soon he will not be so nervous as he will associate the pleasing treat with the situation rather than nervousness.

Dogs will bark to get your attention and this is one way to communicate.  However, if you respond to barking every time you are just teaching your dog to bark more.  Attempt to get him to communicate in other ways and reinforce that behavior with praise and treats.  He can rub on your leg if he wants to go outside just as easy as he can bark at you!

Separation anxiety can make a dog start barking excessively.  This is a problem for you as it is disturbing to neighbors and others and you are not even there.  Try to get your dog past separation anxiety early on in his training when he is just a puppy.  You can use a crate whenever you leave and he will adjust to you being gone in his own space.  Do not make a big issue out of leaving your dog home alone but just slip out quietly.  He will be more likely to behave until you get back if he doesn’t really know that you have left.

Dogs bark to protect the ones that they love.  This is usually considered to be a good thing unless your dog is barking excessively to protect you from the mailman (or mail person!) every single day!  In that case try to distract your dog with a treat or some playtime.  You can also introduce your dog to the mailman.  If he becomes friendly with the people who come by most often then he is less likely to bark excessively.  If your dog barks for protection though, you should be grateful as someday you may find yourself in a circumstance where you need that.

You can find dog training videos that can give you some tips and techniques to curb excessive barking but oftentimes just more socialization and more playtimes will help stop the excessive barking.  The one thing you should consider though is that your dog is often barking for a reason and you should find out what that reason is.  Then you can deal with the barking.

If your dog only barks for proper communication you and others like you will enjoy your dog more.  Start training your dog not to bark excessively while he is just a puppy and by the time he is grown up you will know that if he is barking it is for a good reason.

Quick Tips For Housebreaking A Puppy

There are some quick tips for housebreaking a puppy that will be very easy to accomplish if you are patient and committed to the task. When you get your puppy and begin to plan a housebreaking strategy, it will be important to remember that your puppy is a baby and will not understand the rules of the house immediately.

Puppies can learn to go potty outside very quickly if you are consistent and do not over-react. When you want to learn how to potty train a puppy quickly and easily, following a few simple tips will get you started. It will be important that you not yell at your puppy or rub their nose in a mess. Puppies do not learn from this kind of discipline. They often will get more confused about where they are supposed to do because everywhere they sniff, they will smell the mess, which tells their brain that it is okay to go in that spot.

Some people decide to paper train their puppy before moving the training to the out of doors. However, this often makes the training process longer and more confusing for the dog. Starting you puppy with outdoor potty training will be a great way to start proper training. If you plan on training your dog to go outside to go potty, you will not have to worry about moving newspaper slowly toward the door as you try to get them to go outside.

Take your dog outside first thing in the morning, right after they eat or drink, and last thing at night. By developing this habit, they will learn much more easily to wait until morning to go potty. Additionally, don’t feed your dog two hours before bedtime. If you feed your dog snacks right before bedtime, you will probably have a mess to clean up in the morning.

When you puppy starts sniffing and turning in circles it wants to go outside. Pick your puppy up and say, “Time to go potty”, then take them out to go. If they go, praise the puppy, if they don’t, just let them in and try to catch them again when they start sniffing again.

When there is a mess, and there will be, clean it up immediately and use a deodorizer to remove any odor from the floor or carpet. If you praise the dog when you take it out, whether or not it goes potty, and ignore it when it makes an indoor mess, it will quickly connect the praise with doing it’s business outside.

A great tip involves cues. Dogs respond to sound cues extraordinarily well. When you feed your dog canned food, they will often come when they hear the can opener. By using a bell or timer each time you put your puppy out, they will get used to going outside to go potty when they hear a bell or timer. To get them in the habit, use a timer set for one hour and put them outside each time the bell goes off.

As your puppy gets older, you can extend the time between the bell. If you use a little silver bell and hang it by the door, you can easily train your dog to ring the bell when they want to go outside. Creating the habit to go outside is one of the best tips for housebreaking a puppy that you will learn.
