How crucial is the gender of a dog when choosing a pet?  Will the gender of your new puppy make a difference when it comes to training?  It depends upon what you are wanting when choosing a dog. Both male and female dogs will make wonderful pets and probably the most important aspect of choosing a puppy is not the gender but rather the personality of the dog and how it responds to you and your family.

The temperament, the level of required care and the size of the breed are far more important considerations when choosing a puppy than the gender of the dog.  Males and females have different personality attributes but either can be well trained and both can make wonderful pets. For more information about dog obedience training and where you can get dog training videos online that will show you step-by-step every thing you need to know.

If you are getting a dog just for a pet and not for breeding reasons it is crucial to get your dog spayed or neutered.  If you do not get your female dog spayed you will have to deal with the mess of her going into heat every so often.  If you do not get your male dog neutered you will have to restrain him and make sure that he does not go out roaming to find female dogs that are in heat.  Breeding dogs is a big responsibility that encompasses more than just adorable litters of puppies every so often.  Spaying and neutering is the wise thing to do for the ordinary pet owner.

Male dogs are often believed to be more territorial and therefore better watchdogs.  Females are usually a bit smaller in stature but are thought to have more loving and warmer temperaments.  Families with young children may consider a female dog because of the maternal instincts of a female or they may choose a male because of the increased energy and endurance to play.  It is an individual decision depending upon what you are looking for in a pet.

However, it is smart to consider that all of these characterizations are just generalizations. Female dogs can be great watchdogs and male dogs can be loving companions.  Dogs exhibit their own personalities and what is important is how they mesh into your family.

There are some traits that are more dominant within a certain gender but dogs of the other gender will sometimes exhibit those same traits.  For example, male dogs tend to mark their territories but a female will also mark territory at different times.  Female dogs tend to be a bit more independent but a male dog can also show this trait.

It is believed that female dogs are a bit simpler to housetrain because they do not mark territory as frequently.  Male dogs are often chosen for police work because of their increased endurance.  If you are looking for something specific it may make sense to choose a dog based upon gender but if you are just wanting a wonderful pet, it would be better to choose a pleasing personality that meshes with your family rather than a male or a female.

Puppies bring their own challenges whether they are male or female and both genders can make wonderful and loving pets.  Choose a puppy to become part of your family rather than basing a decision upon gender.

Puppy Training Tips For House Training

Puppies are so cute; everybody loves them.  They are curious, fun, playful and cuddley and we tend to enjoy every part of having a new puppy until they do their duty in an inappropriate spot and then we have to contend with the biggest problem and difficulty of having a new puppy, house training.

The most important thing to remind yourself of and to take into consideration is that your puppy is still very young.  He does not yet have the comprehension level to control his potty habits or to realize what you are asking him to do when you tell him to go potty.  You will need to have patience and work with him closely for a couple of weeks before he develops the ability to alert you when it is time to go out and to control his bladder and other functions.

At the start you may need to take your puppy outside as often as 2 to 3 times per hour.  That may seem like a lot but a little puppy does not yet comprehend how to control himself and the active playing that most puppies engage in creates urine.  Nighttime may be better as a resting puppy will not need to go out as often.  Do not wake a sleeping puppy just to go out to potty but rather just make sure and take him out as soon as you can after he awakens.

Consistency is the most important part of potty training.  Be consistent in taking him out on his leash to the same potty place every time.  Be consistent about issuing the same commands such as “potty now” every time.  And be consistent with your lavish praise and special treats when he does finally go.

If you make the entire experience a positive one for your puppy your puppy house training will be completed sooner.  That means that you will need to be patient and loving even when there is a mishap.  Just take him outside and praise him when he does it correctly and ignore it when he does it wrong.  Your dog wants to make you happy so it is crucial that you do not do anything that will confuse him.

It is unlikely that you will be able to spend all of your time with your puppy so when you need to be away from your puppy you should put him in a crate.  Puppies and dogs are natural den animals and they like to have a small place of their own.  Also, puppies will rarely dirty their own place so a crate will assist you in teaching your puppy how to control himself.

Consistency is the most crucial aspect of training.  Make sure that you use a consistent command and take him to the same place every time so that there is no confusion on his part.  Making the experience a positive one for him will also help him to learn faster and you will be done with your potty training sooner.

It should take just a few short weeks to complete your house training.  Doing it right will serve you for the entire time that you own your dog so be consistent and positive and you will be able to enjoy many happy years with your new puppy. For more information about dog obedience training then you can get dog training videos online that will teach you every thing you need to know.

Unusual Beds For Dogs

Until the past few years, unusual and custom dog beds were unheard of. It was simply the norm that dogs would sleep on a mat, the couch, the owner’s bed or a rug, and didn’t need anything fancy. But as dogs have become more and more beloved over the years, and in many cases, rather more pampered, beds for dogs have also grown into items that dog owners have taken a shine to. The result of this has been the creation of dog beds that are fancy or unusual.

If you’re thinking of luxurious dog beds, then there’s nothing more luxurious than a canopy bed, for humans or for dogs. The Horchow Collection of fine furniture and luxury linens (http://www.horchow.com/) doesn’t cater only to human patrons, but also sells a canopy bed for their dogs. It’s crafted by hand with a metal frame, the four corners rising to curve over the bed, adorned with brushed metal roses. These are, as the website describes, “hand painted in a Caribbean gold finish.” Of the various unusual beds for dogs that are available, this one is expensive, but it truly is a work of art.

But taking a more formal route in unusual dog beds, one very interesting type is the Murphy bed. This is the sort of bed that folds up against a wall in the daytime, displaying only a smooth wooden cabinet, but then lowers the hidden mattress and bedding to the floor at night. This type of dog bed furniture can be both utilitarian and decorative. It saves space in the daytime, but can also be designed to match the other furniture in the room. It becomes an actual part of the decor.

The thing about these unusual beds for dogs is that there is often an element of fun in the choice. Why else would you find beds in the shape of cars, tents, gazebos, spaceships or elegant divans? Gone are the days when a simple dog crate bed was good enough, even if a bit boring. Now people are looking for some style, a bit of pizzazz, to go along with the usefulness of the dog bed. Some of these unusual types of beds are just the thing to add that spice.

TDog Beds For Organic Living

Any dog owner wants to be sure they pick from the best quality dog beds that are out there, but that goal becomes even more important if the owner and their family are making the switch to an organic, eco-friendly lifestyle. If that’s a change you also find yourself in the middle of, then you’re probably already wondering what might be the best dog bed to fit this new way of life. Does it matter that much, when it’s “just” a dog bed? As a part of your environment and in terms of the planet’s general health, yes it does. And fortunately, there are some products available that are ecologically responsible, yet also sturdy and cleanable.

You don’t necessarily have to go all-organic immediately. Remember the three R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle), after all. The best dog bed for your new green lifestyle may actually be something recycled rather than something brand new and organic. Take the dog bed duvets, for example, at the Molly Mutt website (www.mollymutt.com). You might buy one of their rectangle dog beds, made of pre-shrunk, washable cotton, and then fill them with your own recycled fabrics, such as old blankets, rags and old clothes.

If you’ve begun to switch to a green, organic lifestyle, then you already know that you have to work a bit, to avoid synthetics and other non-natural materials. Finding the best dog bed to fit this type of lifestyle can require just as much work. But with some careful searching, eventually you will find a pet bed that will meet your criteria. Your dog can sleep as soundly and comfortably as ever, but you will have a clear conscience as well.

What Is the Best Dog Beds?

If memory foam mattresses provide the best sleeping experiences for humans, it stands to reason that they might also result in the best dog beds, especially if your canine friend has joint or muscle problems. Polyurethane memory foam molds itself to the sleeper’s body, triggered by their body heat, and then returns to its original shape when it cools down. Because of this, it provides consistent support to the body. Which is why, when people do their dog bed shopping, they often consider a bed of this material for an arthritic or older dog.

A large dog bed of memory foam might be especially helpful, because dogs of greater size frequently suffer from a joint disease called hip dysplasia. It affects not only the fit of the hip joints but the muscles around the rump. Memory foam can mold itself to support the dog’s body completely. And this type of bed can even help relieve discomfort a dog might suffer from being overweight. Such a bed might be one of the best dog beds for large dogs with hip dysplasia, or dogs that need good support until their weight can be brought down.

Some people provide heated dog beds for their companions with joint problems, but it’s possible that memory foam beds do just as well as those. One advantage of memory foam is its breath-ability. This means that it retains heat in wintertime, but is cooler in the summer when overheating might otherwise be a problem. The extra winter warmth of memory foam beds is what may make them the beds for arthritic animals, because not only would they retain the dog’s body heat when it’s needed, but they’d also provide protection against floor temperatures that might get a bit too cool at night.

Keep in mind that even if these small memory foam mattresses are the best dog beds when it comes to support and comfort, you’d still have to guard against an over enthusiastic chewer. You’d need a sturdy cover to put over the mattress to keep the dog from chewing on the polyurethane. But memory foam can help provide excellent orthopedic dog beds for older dogs or those with arthritis or other joint problems. It might be worth going that extra mile if it can help your dog sleep more comfortably.

Pet Luxury With Designer Dog Beds

So what if you want to pamper your dog and look through the designer dog beds for a place where your canine best friend can sleep? There’s nothing that says you need to leave your dog sleeping on some shapeless pad somewhere. It can be especially useful if you’ve designed your home to look a certain way, and can add a dog bed that will fit in. And there are certainly manufacturers who have created luxury dog beds in an abundance of styles.

You can go completely Hollywood with designer dog beds from websites like Bling Bling Puppy (www.blingblingpuppy.com). In fact, that site has a product actually called “The Hollywood Bed,” which is a curved faux leather dog bed couch, complete with faux fur leopard print seats and end cushions. Or you might try the “Hotel Bed” from the same site, which claims to mimic beds from five star hotels, with a duvet and comforter, and a pillow. Talk about the lap of luxury for your dog.

However, you may prefer to go with casual comfort in designer doggie beds, or even choose a sportier look. You can find these too, with a little hunting. At Oh My Dog Supplies (www.ohmydogsupplies.com), you’ll find the “Casual Dog Couch,” which looks like a big overstuffed arm chair, complete with thick cushion, rounded arms and a curved back. Or perhaps you’d prefer dog beds like the “Furcedes Benz” from the Fetchdog website (www.fetchdog.com). It’s probably no surprise that the bed is shaped like a car, with wheels of cloth, windshield and headlights.

When it comes right down to it, designer dog beds aren’t necessarily a matter of pampering or going overboard. They might cost slightly more than other types of dog beds, and yet most of them aren’t a whole lot more. Some of them are more plush and would probably be more comfortable than ordinary beds. If you’re already willing to provide a heated dog bed for a pet that has arthritis or old, creaking bones, then why not get a comfortable bed that also looks nice and might even match the home décor too?

Stop Your Dog From Barking Excessively

All dogs bark sometimes.  It is their primary mode of communication but when a dog barks excessively it is annoying for everyone.  Some breeds bark more than others but all dogs bark at times.

Dogs will bark excessively for a variety of reasons.  If your dog spends the entire day in the house or in the same yard he may start barking excessively because he is bored. Dogs love exercise and interacting with people.  Dogs also love social stimulation, as they are pack animals.  If your dog is barking out of boredom try taking more walks or incorporating more playtimes throughout the day

Being overly nervous or scared can also prompt a dog to start barking excessively.  Appropriately socialized dogs tend to be calmer and more relaxed around various people and in different situations but a dog that is not used to new things may start barking out of anxiety.  Start socializing your dog by taking him to new and different places and into new situations.  Offer him praise and rewards when he is quiet and well behaved and soon he will not be so nervous as he will associate the pleasing treat with the situation rather than nervousness.

Dogs will bark to get your attention and this is one way to communicate.  However, if you respond to barking every time you are just teaching your dog to bark more.  Attempt to get him to communicate in other ways and reinforce that behavior with praise and treats.  He can rub on your leg if he wants to go outside just as easy as he can bark at you!

Separation anxiety can make a dog start barking excessively.  This is a problem for you as it is disturbing to neighbors and others and you are not even there.  Try to get your dog past separation anxiety early on in his training when he is just a puppy.  You can use a crate whenever you leave and he will adjust to you being gone in his own space.  Do not make a big issue out of leaving your dog home alone but just slip out quietly.  He will be more likely to behave until you get back if he doesn’t really know that you have left.

Dogs bark to protect the ones that they love.  This is usually considered to be a good thing unless your dog is barking excessively to protect you from the mailman (or mail person!) every single day!  In that case try to distract your dog with a treat or some playtime.  You can also introduce your dog to the mailman.  If he becomes friendly with the people who come by most often then he is less likely to bark excessively.  If your dog barks for protection though, you should be grateful as someday you may find yourself in a circumstance where you need that.

You can find dog training videos that can give you some tips and techniques to curb excessive barking but oftentimes just more socialization and more playtimes will help stop the excessive barking.  The one thing you should consider though is that your dog is often barking for a reason and you should find out what that reason is.  Then you can deal with the barking.

If your dog only barks for proper communication you and others like you will enjoy your dog more.  Start training your dog not to bark excessively while he is just a puppy and by the time he is grown up you will know that if he is barking it is for a good reason.

How To Choose The Best Dog Gate

Have you ever had your kids get into parts of the house they know they are not supposed to? Dogs do the same.  Pet Gates help solve this problem.  Entertainingly enough, pet gates look rather like toddler gates, and have many of the same features.

The main difference is that most dogs can clearly jump a gate that is about three feet in height.  By the time your daughter is old enough crawl or walk, parents want to keep their kids out of areas they shouldn’t be in.  It is essential that if your dog can leap over the opening, that they can not be able to or are taught not to hop.

With all the choices of dog gates, you can mix and match throughout the house.  Pressure mounted gates are good for narrower doorways and are installed directly onto the wall.  They use spring-loaded method to create pressure against the wall or door jamb.  Some tension mount pet doors are small enough to walk over so there will be a way to go over without taking it down each time.  You don’t want to walk over the gate and give your dog ideas.

Hardware dog gates are used for more of a permanent use as it screws directly into the wall.  Among these gates your choices are infinite.  This ables you to step through with relative ease.  While these gates are permanent, that are exceptionally helpful in the long run.  .

A freestanding gate is the next kind of dog gate. They do not involve any equipment.  Most freestanding gates will arrive preassembled.  These gates can be put at any entryway or hallway but is not suggested for stairs.  They have extended feet that are rubber lined to keep them from slipping or marring your flooring.  In sequence for these gates to maintain a appropriate balance, they will tend to be a little bit shorter.

Each household is different and call for various needs in gates.  A gate that helps in your house might not work in your neighbors house.  You need to take into account your dog and their temperament when purchasing a gate.  If you are purchasing the pet gate to maintain your pet out of an region, you want something secure that they can’t shove around or over.  Depending on the tendencies, weight and size, will decide the style of gate that fits your needs.  Hardware pet gates may not be able to be used in rental properties without the landlords authorization.

The greatest way to choose the best gate for you is to go online and check out the selection.  You can frequently get huge deals and ways to price match on the internet.  You can locate many different styles and ways to compare each gate online.  Whether you decide on a hardware installed, pressure installed, or freestanding gate, they should come in a variety of styles, materials, and colors. You can also purchase these to compliment your elevated dog feeders. The size of the mesh or slats can be critical if you have a puppy or little pet to contain.  Keep an eye out for measurements that describe the space between the slats, or ask the manufacturer for facts.  A little effort will definitely turn up the best dog gates for your home.
