Building Attention: Game 1 Clicker dog training

THIS IS AWESOME! My favorite dog trainer and dog whisperer of all time has just released a free video online explaining how to eliminate 94% of all unwanted behavior in ANY dog. Her name is Krista Cantrell and I absolutely LOVE the way she teaches. Click on the video to watch. You'll be glad you did...

This video goes over one game of how to train your dog to pay attention to you in distracting environments.
If you find that your dog is not interested in the game, try the game with higher level reinforcement- better treats (or toys), move to a less distracting environment, more to an area where you can run more (yet is safe)- as you could see in my video my yard was almost too small to play this game as its really moving fast and away that encourages a dog to run to you.

This is a continuation of the video “Barking Episode 3- barking on a walk”. Please watch that video first to work on the foundation exercises. Also watch my videos on loose leash walking as a tight leash can cause a dog to be more aroused and reactive on walks.

Step One-

Click and feed your dog as he alerts towards the gate he usually barks at BEFORE he barks, and then walk the other way. Repeat this step until he is no longer alerting. You can also feed your dog for looking, instead of clicking. However, if you do this and your dog turns around to look at the food, don’t give it to him. You want the other dog to be the predictor of reinforcement, NOT your hand movement!

Step Two-

Walk closer to the gate or window that the reactive dog usually appears at and either feed the dog AS they are looking, or click the dog and feed. Then walk away.

Step Three-

Pass the house in an arc. Walk your dog across the street so that he is as far away from the barking dog as possible as you both cross. As the dog begins to look confident and relaxed you can walk the dog in a closer arc. Keep in mind to not walk TOO close to the other dog, as you don’t want to cause it any undue stress!

If your dog becomes reactive, simply say “lets go” and go the other way (with NO TREAT). Practice the cue “lets go” before using it with distractions. If your dog keeps reacting make it easier for your dog, walk up to where he is comfortable, click and then turn back the way you came.

Step Four-

When you have changed your dogs emotional response to dogs barking at fences, continue to give your dog information and feedback!
Walk past the barking dog, and tell your dog what a good dog he is for being so brave and relaxed. Remember you can use your voice and calm touch to tell your dog they are wonderful! You can also use calming signals as you pass, to tell your dog you are not worried about the other dog.

Tips-

1- Use management and prevention. Start practicing this exercise with the dogs that your dog has the lowest reaction to and then work up to the ones that he has the highest reaction to. If that means driving past the house up the street and getting out to walk your dog, it’s worth it!

2- If your dog recently reacted to another dog, when passing a house with a dog at the gate, go back a step and increase distance because your dog will be more likely to react.

3- If you are not seeing improvement- try using better treats and try working from further distances first. You can also practice just hanging out in front of your house, or practicing ’settles’ with your dog on leash to help your dog be calmer when outside.

4-Don’t leave your reactive dog behind a fence or window when you are not home- as they will learn to become reactive to other dogs.

More to come in this description box. But this video is of the beginning steps of how to train your dog to love being left alone as well as how to set up a error free environment to leave your new puppy in. This video is low quality 1-because its so long, but I wanted you to get a sense of “real time” from it, rather than a slick 3 min tutorial- which will be coming as well going over all the steps and problem shooting
2- because I had to use a different camera because Frys Electronics screwed up MY video camera!

Dog Training- Teaching commands with water hose

http://www.sitmeanssit.com You can teach different dog training commands with a water hose as you can see in this daily dog training video. Although a dog may like water, a dog not necessarily will be very passionate about water coming from a hose, so this would be limited to dogs that really like water from a hose. You could also teach the dog to go under, over, or through objects with a hose if he really is passionate about the hose, but in this video we are showing how we would teach them to just get into water.

How to stop Jumping up!- clicker dog training

This video goes over some simple exercises on how to teach your dog to stop jumping on you!
Remember! Dogs jump for a reason! It is either to get your attention, they are over aroused or stressed, or to acquiesce to you (when the dog tries to get to your mouth to lick it)

Tips:
1-Teach your dog what you want them to do instead of jumping up FIRST
2- Don’t reinforce jumping up with attention
3- Proof by creating situations your dog will want to jump up in, so that the dog generalizes the behavior.
4- Prevent jumping when you are not in the mood to train your dog, by having your dog on leash or in his pen

This video is a how to on how to change your dogs emotional response to something they are frightened of. The example in the video is my dog Kiko who suddenly became fearful of crossing the kitchen floor. Common issues with dogs can be- shiny floors, stairs, man hole covers, grates, metal, wet grass, a crate they had a bad experience in… the list goes on. This same technique can be used in all those situations.

This video is a how to video on how to teach your dog to target an object with his front paws. This is not only a great game to teach your puppy or dog how to learn to learn, but it is the foundation for many behaviors and tricks. Tricks with this foundation include- wave, shake , high five, standing up, hands up, close the door, cop cop, say your prayers, descrimination, freestyle foot work and more.

Take care with large breed dogs or dogs who have sharp toe nails as you can get slapped. Perhaps teach shake down the line when you have more experience as a trainer so that your large dog doesnt learn to paw at you as their favorite behavior. The great thing about the technique that I am using is that the dog isnt learning to paw at your skin, but at an object, so you can get that on stimulus control before it is just your arm (for very large and powerful dog breeds). You can also click them fore being gentle before you switch to using just your hand for shake.
