Walking Handstand- amazing funny dog training trick

This is a video of Splash’s first lessons at a walking handstand. I was so inspired by Heather and Jesse’s most amazing walking handstand that I thought I would give it a try with Splash. However, no dog can do it cuter than Jesse on JustJesse197 ’s youtube channel :) Other walking handstand inspirations are
Hechiasia
Zsianz1
Yolle555

If your dog can do a walking handstand that you clicker trained (not one where they are being punished) please post as a video response.

I thought I would show the unfinished results as it it quite fun to see Splash figuring it all out. In my living room she is panting because in between the tricks she is getting to play with a balloon and run around the living room like a mad dog (this is her favorite reward in the world).

Here is Splash and I improvising to the music of Avatar. We will be using this song for one of our routines. I am all over the place right now, so I thought posting this would give me a kick to get the routine down soon. I have gotten a bunch of ideas from just editing a couple days of practice sessions together.

I loved the movie Avatar. Mainly because of the extreme bond and respect of animals shown in the movie.

This is another cool Dogmantics Dog Training Tip on how to teach your dog to walk next to you on a loose leash.

If you are consistent with this behavior, you can actually make pressure on the leash a CUE for the dog to back up and they learn to walk on a loose leash as a default.
=—-
Teaching a dog to back up into the heel position on walks is helpful for many reasons.

1- If you have more than one dog on a walk sometimes it can be hard to turn around and go the other way if both dogs are ahead of you. Teaching them to back into the heel position allows you to move freely

2- If you train your dog that when he reaches the end of the leash the only way he can move forwards again is to back up, he will consciously start avoiding hitting the end of the leash. This means- No more pulling on leash.

3- This is a great impulse control exercise based on the Premack Principle. In order to move forwards you must first move backwards.

This is a quick how to video I made for a youtube user who said they were having trouble getting rid of the lure. I hope to make a more in depth video on this subject. As well as how to ween off of treats as well. But for now here is my Dog training tip of the day. I created the video immediately after having the idea to make it, so I used my own dogs, it would have been great to have used a puppy. I encourage other dog trainers out there to make How to videos on how to fade a lure when training with food, because it is information that is very important to stop training enthusiasts from getting stuck down the road

Quick tips when using a lure:

1 Get RID of the lure as soon as you can! The goal is within 3 trials.

2 If you don’t have a clicker use a very short word like “yes!” or “yep!”

3 Always make it harder and harder, don’t get stuck at the same level of criteria

4 If you go to far to quickly you can always go back a step

5 If your dog is not following the lure, get a smellier lure- real meat!

Dog Training Tip of the Day- Adding a Verbal Cue

This is my dog training tip of the day for today. It is a continuation of the last tip. In this video you will learn how to add a verbal cue to a behavior that you taught with a hand signal.

There are three easy steps to teaching a Verbal Cue:

Step 1: Give the hand signal 5-10 times to help the dog predict what you will ask next.

Step 2: Say the Verbal Cue BEFORE you move a muscle to do the Visual Cue

Step 3: Put time between your new Verbal Cue and your Visual Cue. Wait the dog out and see if they will offer the cue without the hand signal.

As you could see Kiko did not know what I wanted at one point, and offered another behavior besides the ‘Spin’. Instead of telling her she was wrong, I made a kissy noise and asked her to touch my hand to reset her. If she had continued to guess incorrectly, I would go back a step and give her the ‘Spin’ hand signal again after saying the verbal cue. The more you play this game the faster your dog will be at picking up new cues. Kiko now knows after a few minutes, that ‘Obama’ is the new word for ‘Spin’. DOGS ARE SO SMART!
