CHICKADEE & PISTOL 2009 - 3) 3 Weeks Old, Their 1st Meal
THE FIRST MEAL: Do you want to see something really cute? Watch 3 1/2 week old puppies eat, real food, for the first time. This is Chickadee & Pistol 2009 litter of 8 puppies. You will see how the puppies have developed in just 1 week. This week their eyes and ears have opened. They now can hear and see their mother.
I have invited the new adoptive families to come and see the puppies eat their first, real food, meal. I have taken Chickadee away from the puppies about 1 hour before starting the feeding. I want them to be a little hungry.
I take the food that I’m going to feed the puppies and add warm water to it, about an hour before I plan on feeding. Once it is soft I put it in a blender and make a mash or peplum out of it. I add warm water until I get the right soft pudding texture. I want it a little soupy so it is easy for the puppies to eat.
With the new families all present, I put down the bowl of food and the fun begins. I very gently touch the mussel of each puppy to the food. They usually push away from the food, them taste it and come pushing forward. The puppies don’t understand how to find the food. They don’t understand the concept of raising their heads up over the edge of the bowl. You have to help them. The puppies will eat off of each other, finding ears, feet and anything else that feels like a nipple. Remember, up until this time, food has always come from their mothers nipples. They walk through the bowl and smear food from head to toe.
Once the puppies are done eating, I bring Chickadee back to them and she will clean them up. I make sure that they all get inside so that they don’t get cold from wear their food or the washing that their mother will give them.
The mother’s registered name is Spirits Pick Me Chickadee and the father’s name is Shorelands Pistol Pete II CD MX MXJ NF. I breed Golden Retriever and Labrador Retriever in Redmond, WA. VOODOO & JOHNNY 2009 THE 3RD TIME EATTING: This is the 3rd time the puppies have eaten real food. An hour before I feed the puppies I take VooDoo away from them. This is the start of weaning the puppies from the mother. I take the food that I’m going to feed the puppies and add warm water to it, about an hour before I plan on feeding. Once it is soft I put it in a blender and make a mush or peplum out of it. I add warm water until I get the right soft pudding texture. I want it a little soupy so it is easy for the puppies to eat.

The puppies will eat off of each other, finding ears, feet and anything else that feels like a nipple. Remember, up until this time, food has always come from their mothers nipples. They walk through the bowl and smear food from head to toe.
Once the puppies are done eating, I bring VooDoo back to them and she will clean them up. I then bring their mother back to them. She cleans up all of the puppies. When she is done they are a little wet but they are clean.
You will see the 3rd time that the puppies have been feed. They are all ready getting the idea of raising their chins to find the food in the bowl. Once their tummies are full, I will bring VooDoo back to them so she can do the clean up.
The pups are doing very well at eating. Tomorrow I will take VooDoo away 2 hours early, so the puppies will really be hungry.

Busy & Zoom 2009 - 2) - Puppies Are 3 Hours Old
On July 1st 2009 Busy and Zoom have a litter of 11 puppies. It is a good size litter. There are 6 girls and 5 boys. When the labor starts, I find it normal to have a puppy an hour. There are times when you get 2 close together, but then you have a long time before the next one arrives. You must watch closely for any signs that the female may be in trouble. There could be a baby that has turned sidewise and is blocking the others from being born. If she is doing a lot of straining, more than likely, that next puppy will be born die. The birthing process can be very long. If you have 9 puppies it can take up to 9 hours for all of them to be born. Of course, you won’t know how many are in there, so you will be watching for maybe 11 to 12 hours. I always take my mothers to the vet, when I think they are done and get an x-ray, to be sure everyone has been born. I also get my puppies check out at that time too.
We are back home from the vet and I have settled Busy into the whelping box. I’m keeping the puppies in a warming box so they stay warm and so she won’t step on them. Once Busy is comfortable I start introducing the puppies to her. I take 3 puppies at a time and place them next to her. She will start licking and cleaning the puppies. Busy is an experienced mother. She knows how to clean and stimulate the puppies. Just in case you don’t know, puppies don’t go to the bathroom on their own at birth. They have to be stimulated to do so. She is doing a great job of cleaning them. Her milk came in by Thursday morning. I make sure each puppy is cleaned up and is nursing. Sometimes the mothers milk has not come in yet, but the puppies should still nurse. I kept adding puppies until I have 1/2 of the litter with the mother or about 5 or 6 puppies. I wait until the puppies in the warming box start fussing or about 2 hours and then I rotate the other half of the litter with the mother. I keep doing this until the mother indicates that she wants all of the puppies with her. When I put all of the puppies with the mother I watch very carefully to be sure that she doesn’t step on a puppy or roll on a puppy. This is a common way to loose a puppy. If you look closely at the whelping box, you will see that there is a railing on the inside that stops the mother from laying up against the side. This is called a pig railing and provides a place for the puppy to be, so the mother won’t lay on it. The puppies weigh about 10 to 16 oz.
For the next 5 to 7 days I sleep next to the whelping box where I can hear the puppies, again listening for a puppy that is being squished. I watch that the smallest puppies is always close to the mother and that it is nursing. Sleeping next to the litter, I’m right there when the mother wants to go outside. I always pick up the puppies and put them in the warming box, when she gets up and starts moving around.
When you deliver the puppies you tie off the umbilical cord before you cut it. I have the vet replace it with a surgical staple. You can see this staple in the video and how the cord is drying up.
You can tell if the puppies are warm enough by watching to see if they are spread out away from the mother. If they are all huddle around and under the mother your room is too cold.
When the puppies are eating their little tails are going like mad. Happy little tails. Golden Retrievers come in all different shades of gold. They go from light to dark.
Busy finds a different way of nursing her puppies. She doesn’t have to lie down.

VOODOO & JOHNNY 2009 - 2) 3 WEEKS OLD

VOODOO & JOHNNY 2009 3 WEEKS OLD When mothers have babies, they dont like other dogs around. They are very protective of their pups. On your walk VooDoo see another of my dogs, who she normally would play with. But, because Voo Doo has puppies, she is giving the other dog a wide birth. The Milky Way was built for raising puppies. There is a wonderful outside area, where the mother can go to stretch her legs, get a drink of water, or just get away from her babies. There is a small door, big enough for the mother to fit through that leads to the inside where the puppies are. Last week the puppies were in the whelping box. The whelping box keeps the little ones from getting lost while their eyes are still not open. When their eyes start opening, they also start getting their feet under themselves and they start exploring a lot. This week you will see a big difference in their ability to get around.
Notice how the puppies are starting to use the feet and mouths to play with each other. These puppies still do not have any teeth. They are starting to play away from their rug, but as of yet, they have not gone outside.
I start teaching housebreaking now. I do this by making sure that the bedding that the puppies sleep on is changed every day. The puppies learn very quickly that they should go to the bathroom on the sawdust, not the rug. As time goes along, I make the path from the rug to the door very narrow and I push the sawdust out the small door. If their bedding is kept REALLY clean, they learn to go outside to go to the bathroom and to sleep on the clean bedding.
Notice that when VooDoo comes inside how all the puppies start running around with their nose up in the air. They are looking for food.
