Controlling The Dog’s Flea Infestation With Grooming

Have you heard about the idea that an ugly dog also has an ugly owner? It is widely believed that the appearance of the pet is a reflection of the way it is cared for and treated by the owner. A dirty and mangy dog, or one that has an emaciated look will be pitied and the owner will be scorned. It is quite common for people to believe that the poor dog is owned by an irresponsible person.
A healthy diet would not be enough to keep the pet healthy and looking good. A dog owner has to be aware of the fact that the pet needs to be regularly groomed to maintain its impressive appearance and also to resolve parasite infestation that can lead to various health concerns.
Flea infestation is most common in dogs. These small and wingless parasites would cause the dog annoyance, discomfort and a host of other health concerns. A dog with severe flea infestation will constantly scratch and bite the body because flea bites will cause severe itching. Flea allergy dermatitis results when the dog develops an allergic response to flea saliva. A dog’s appearance will be marred by the bald patches and oozing sores that would result from the flea infestation. Severe flea infestation can also cause anemia. If the pet is infested with fleas, tape worms can be transmitted not only to the dog but also the human family as a flea carrying tapeworm eggs can be accidentally ingested.
Flea infestation can be prevented if the dog is groomed regularly. Dogs come in contact with these parasites when they play with infested dogs or when they pass areas where fleas lurk to wait for potential host. Adult fleas can be easily eliminated by anti flea products but the infestation tends to recur as the eggs are resistant to insecticides.
This is where the importance of regular grooming comes in. Bathe the dog with an anti-flea shampoo. Allow the lather to stay for about 10 minutes before rinsing the dog thoroughly. Once the fur has thoroughly dried, use a fine toothed flea comb to remove fleas killed by the treatment. For good measure, all the areas of the house frequented by the dog must be vacuumed thoroughly giving particular attention to carpets and rugs as well as to cracks and crevices as these areas are favorite hiding places of fleas. The beddings and the toys of the dog must be washed in hot water as well.
Grooming the dog regularly would be an effective prevention not only against flea infestation but also against any other kind of parasite infestation. These grooming sessions would also be treasured bonding moments with the pet.
