Have you heard about the idea that an ugly dog also has an ugly owner? It is widely believed that the appearance of the pet is a reflection of the way it is cared for and treated by the owner. A dirty and mangy dog, or one that has an emaciated look will be pitied and the owner will be scorned. It is quite common for people to believe that the poor dog is owned by an irresponsible person.

A healthy diet would not be enough to keep the pet healthy and looking good. A dog owner has to be aware of the fact that the pet needs to be regularly groomed to maintain its impressive appearance and also to resolve parasite infestation that can lead to various health concerns.

Flea infestation is most common in dogs. These small and wingless parasites would cause the dog annoyance, discomfort and a host of other health concerns. A dog with severe flea infestation will constantly scratch and bite the body because flea bites will cause severe itching. Flea allergy dermatitis results when the dog develops an allergic response to flea saliva. A dog’s appearance will be marred by the bald patches and oozing sores that would result from the flea infestation. Severe flea infestation can also cause anemia. If the pet is infested with fleas, tape worms can be transmitted not only to the dog but also the human family as a flea carrying tapeworm eggs can be accidentally ingested.

Flea infestation can be prevented if the dog is groomed regularly. Dogs come in contact with these parasites when they play with infested dogs or when they pass areas where fleas lurk to wait for potential host. Adult fleas can be easily eliminated by anti flea products but the infestation tends to recur as the eggs are resistant to insecticides.

This is where the importance of regular grooming comes in. Bathe the dog with an anti-flea shampoo. Allow the lather to stay for about 10 minutes before rinsing the dog thoroughly. Once the fur has thoroughly dried, use a fine toothed flea comb to remove fleas killed by the treatment. For good measure, all the areas of the house frequented by the dog must be vacuumed thoroughly giving particular attention to carpets and rugs as well as to cracks and crevices as these areas are favorite hiding places of fleas. The beddings and the toys of the dog must be washed in hot water as well.

Grooming the dog regularly would be an effective prevention not only against flea infestation but also against any other kind of parasite infestation. These grooming sessions would also be treasured bonding moments with the pet.

Basic Tips In Caring For The Dog’s Eyes

Dogs are known to have a high level of intelligence. Dogs are easily trained and they have this inherent ability to know what must be done during a crisis. We often hear how dogs save people’s lives. Surprisingly, these very intelligent animals would still depend on their owner for their well being. Thousands of years ago, dogs have existed in the wild without the intervention of man. Modern day dogs’ well being largely depend on the care provided by the owner. Have these animals gone weaker?

The kind of care given by the owner reflects on the appearance and the personality of the pet. More than providing the pet with highly nutritious foods, dog ownership also entails regular grooming and constant interaction with the human family.

The eyes of the dog are very sensitive organs. It is in fact the pet’s “window to the world”. Apparently, these very intelligent animals does not know how to care good care of these delicate organs. Dogs after a prey would go scampering in bushes unmindful of the thorns and branches that can poke the eyes. Digging a buried treasure, a dog would not mind if dirt and soil would get into the eyes as long as the bone is found. The task of cleaning the pet’s eyes and preventing the development of eye health concerns will be the task of the dog owner. Regular eye grooming would not only remove the tear stains that would mar the pet’s appearance but also prevent the development of possible health concerns.

A dog’s eyes must be cleaned daily. The dog’s first aid kit must have eye care supplies so that immediate relief can be given to the dog in the event that the eyes are injured. A sterile dog eye care solution and an antibacterial ointment are basic eye care supplies.

Removing the gunk in the dog’s eyes with a damp towel or a baby wipe every morning would not take too much time. Long hairs that get into the eyes can be source of irritation. It would be best to clip the hair near the dog’s eyes. An important part of dog eye care is to examine the eyes for swelling, tearing and redness. If these conditions are caused by foreign objects in the eyes, the sterile eye wash can be used to flush the eyes. Excessive tearing, eye discharge and constant pawing of the eyes can be an indication of an eye health concern. Not too serious eye problems are normally resolved in 24 hours but if the symptoms persist, it would be best to take the dog to a vet.

The Ultimate Checklist For Grooming The Dog

A dog will give the human family many years of loyal and affectionate companionship. Being wonderful creatures that they are, it would not be surprising if pet parents provide dogs with a safe and loving home. It should be realized though that dogs would need more than the regular meals that the owner provides. Enough food would not maintain the happiness and overall well being of the pet as exercise and grooming will be necessary as well.

Dogs have different grooming requirements, your dog can be one of the high maintenance or low maintenance breeds. Not all dogs would enjoy grooming routines thus an owner that fits a grooming session to the busy schedule would find the task tedious and challenging. Grooming the dog is a tedious task but this necessary chore would be made easier by following a grooming checklist.

Dogs need to be bathed. This grooming routine though should be done on a “as necessary” basis only. Frequent bathing can result to skin problems when the balance of the natural oils that moisturize the skin is disturbed. Breeds hallmarked by beautiful coats would still need regular brushing to maintain the topnotch appearance of the coat. Brushing the dog’s coat is also a good opportunity to detect parasite infestation and developing skin concerns. Daily brushing is necessary for long haired breeds to maintain the health and appearance of the coat while short haired dogs would benefit from twice a week coat brushing.

Ear cleaning is another grooming routine that should be done weekly. Dogs with pendulous ears and dogs that spend more time in water would need more frequent ear cleaning to prevent the development of serious ear problems. Daily cleaning is as well necessary for the dog’s delicate eyes. The discharge on the dog’s eyes has to be removed with special eye wipes or with clean cloth.

Nail trimming and tooth brushing are the less desirable parts of dog grooming as dogs that enjoy coat brushing and even bathing will put up a good fight if the nails are trimmed or if the teeth are brushed. A dog owner though has to make sure that the dog’s teeth are brushed to give the pet fresh breath and to prevent periodontal diseases. The nails have to be kept trimmed as well. These grooming routines would be easier if the dog was accustomed to the routines at an early age.

A regular grooming routine is necessary in the maintenance of the dog’s overall health. These grooming sessions will be wonderful bonding moments of owner and pet.

Dog Owner’s Responsibilities

Dogs were not branded as man’s best friends for nothing. The steadfast loyalty, the affection and the in inherent desire to protect the human family make dogs the most popular choice for a pet. Caring for a dog is one big responsibility. A person that wants to have a dog for a pet but does not have the time or is not prepared to take on the task of caring for a dog should get a stuffed dog toy instead. A dog owner has to be seriously committed to care for the pet during its life time. A responsible owner would still care for the pet even if it has become a nuisance and would find ways to correct the dog’s problematic behavior instead of abandoning the pet.

Dogs have survived in the wild without the help of humans. Modern day domesticated dogs would depend on the owner not only for their dietary, health and social needs. Aside from the nutrient-rich diet that is regularly provided for the pet, the owner would make sure that the pet is given vitamins and supplements. A dog owner has the responsibility to ensure the health of the pet thus a visit to the vet for vaccinations, worming and general check up is scheduled as soon as the puppy is taken home.

The care dogs need is similar to the care given to babies thus dog owners have to make sure that the pet’s environment is safe. Dogs that are not allowed to stay inside the home must be provided with adequate shelter. Dogs are energetic animals with high exercise requirements and one of the task of a dog owner is to make sure that the pet is given opportunities to exercise.

A responsible dog would make sure that the pet becomes a good canine citizen. Socialization and obedience training would benefit not only the dog and the owner but other people as well. The social skills of the dog will be honed if it is constantly exposed to new things. Obedience training not only teaches the dog to obey commands but even temperament is developed as well.

Dogs need love and attention because they are social animals. One of the most important responsibilities of a dog owner is to set aside time to bond with the pet. Grooming sessions would be good bonding moments and so is playing with the pet a few minutes each day. Getting a dog for a pet would be a thrilling experience but the decision to get one needs careful consideration. Remember, dogs are not toys that can be placed in a corner once the owner gets tired of playing.

Most dogs have that “dog smell” to them, especially when the return in out of the rain. But, some dogs tend to stink a lot of than others. This may be thanks to variety of reasons, a number of that may need a veterinarian’s attention. Here are some of the causes of dog odors and the best treatments to combat these odor problems.

Some dogs prefer to roll within the dirt… and any alternative smelly item that may be close to by. If your dog is susceptible to doing this then regular brushing, grooming and bathing can facilitate to stay your dog smelling clean and fresh.

Getting sprayed by a skunk is one smell we humans recognize immediately and tomato juice is the most common remedy. But, in order for it to work properly, you would like to permit the juice to sit on the dog’s fur for at least fifteen to twenty minutes before rinsing. It’s the acid in the tomatoes that cuts the smell. Another very well-liked solution that dog owners swear by is to combine 1 quart 3% Hydrogen Peroxide, 1/4 cup Baking Soda, and 2 tablespoons dish detergent in an exceedingly massive bowl (do not use a sealed container as this mixture can explode). You want to use this immediately whereas it is still foaming as it is the oxygen in the bubbling mixture that removes the skunk odor. Be careful not to induce either resolution in your pet’s eyes.

Certain dog breeds tend to own naturally oily coats. Unfortunately, the additional oil on the dog’s skin can become rancid and cause unhealthy odors. In this case, your canine desires to be often groomed and bathed to remove this excess oil; otherwise it will develop into irritating skin conditions. Bacterial skin diseases are another common downside inside some breeds. Employing a smart anti-bacterial shampoo specifically formulated for dogs is your best solution. If the skin condition will not clear up inside a cheap quantity of time or if it appears to worsen, be sure to take your dog to the vet.

Dogs with droopy ears tend to develop ear infections quite frequently, although any dog breed will finish up with this painful condition. If your dog smells unhealthy even with regular grooming, take the time to test its ears. Rummage around for redness and irritation. You’ll conjointly notice that your dog will also shake its head usually and most likely strive to scratch to alleviate the itchiness. There are plenty of ear infection solutions available that may help alleviate this problem.

One last issue which will also result in dog odor is impacted or infected anal glands. These sacs, located in the three and 9 o’clock positions, are filled with a fluid that’s normally released when a dog incorporates a bowel movement. If you look rigorously, you may see that your dog’s anal area has become somewhat swollen and the “back end” smells really bad. Take your dog immediately to a veterinarian to own these glands expressed. Be aware that when your dog has had this drawback it tends to reoccur, therefore keep an eye on this. If necessary, you can have the anal glands surgically removed.

How To Get Rid Of Dog Hair

Dogs are the most popular companion animals as more than 37% of households have a dog for a pet. Dogs are noted to have an affectionate and loyal nature thus it would not be surprising if people choose dogs to be their pets. A dog owner would know that along with the happy and entertaining moments, dog ownership is also loaded with a lot of concerns.

Dogs are lovable animals that would make wonderful pets but a dog will not be a good choice for an owner fussy with the cleanliness of the home. Dogs are lovable creatures but let’s face it - these pets can make accidents that will fill the air inside the house with horrible smell. The dog hair that is shed by the dog is another major concern of dog owners. Except for hairless breeds, all dogs are known to shed. Dog hair can be a real nuisance as it will cover the carpet, the furniture, collect on clothing and even float in your coffee. As dog hair is too small to be easily picked up by the hand, the housewife will be in for the unending need to keep the home dog hair free.

For dog owners that have grown to love the pet the option of getting rid of the dog will never be considered thus it would be best to find ways to keep the home a little less hair covered. There are light shedding dogs and there are heavy seasonal shedders but make no mistake of the fact that all dogs shed. Dog shedding can never be “cured” but to deal with excessive shedding, a pet owner may consider changing the diet of the dog. Commercial dog food can be the cause of a dog’s excessive shedding.

Dogs shedding inside the house can be minimized with regular grooming. Brushing the dog’s coat everyday will remove dead hair and lessen the amount of hair that will fall inside the house. Regular grooming has other benefits aside from minimizing the amount of hair inside the home as it will also improve the appearance of the dog as well as enhance the bond between owner and pet. Bathing the dog and using a moisturizing shampoo will strengthen the hair follicle and reduce shedding.

Take out your vacuum cleaner more often and use it on the places where the pet hangs out most of the time. A lint roller is an effective tool that will keep dog hair away from your couch, from your clothes and hopefully will prevent dog hair from floating in your coffee.
