A Dog’s Natural Instincts

Understanding aggressive behavior, in your dog, is the first step to curtailing it. Dogs, by instinct, are aggressive. In the wild aggressive behavior was essential to a dog’s survival. Through domestication and selective breeding this trait has been minimized but the instinct is still there.

Wild dogs, as social animals, lived together in packs with a distinct hierarchy. As dogs came of age they would assert themselves, within the pack, to determine their social ranking. Domesticated dogs have this same instinct. A dog wants to know his ranking within his family as well as within the neighborhood.

Your dog has an instinctive desire to protect his pack, your family, and his territory. Neighborhood dogs pose a threat to your dog’s social standing and his home territory.  This threat can cause aggressive behavior in your dog. Aggression will also occur when your dog feels the need to protect his pack or family. Helping your puppy acclimatize to various situations will help him understand when aggressive behavior is not appropriate.

Socialization

Socialization is an important part of a puppy’s upbringing because it teaches him to cope with a variety of experiences, including getting along with other dogs. It is best for a puppy to learn proper dog behavior and socialization from his mother.  However, if a puppy is taken from his mother before ten weeks of age he may not have been taught how to socially interact with other dogs. If your puppy was taken away from his mother too early you will have to help him with the socialization process to avoid dog aggression.

Your dog requires socialization in two areas. Your dog must get along with other animals, as well as people, and he needs to understand the requirements within your family.  Your dog should be given opportunities to interact in all these areas. Your dog wants to be a responsible member of your family. Training your dog properly will help him learn to be a responsible family member.

Family Dynamics

Your dog is impacted by the way you and your family handles tension. Your dog will react to tension within your home.  He will be tense if family members are tense. Aggressive behavior may be the only way your dog is able to express the tension he feels so your family must learn to deal with tension in an appropriate manner. Your dog will learn much from your example. It is important that you are calm with your dog as well as with other family members.

Your Puppy’s Needs and Wants

It is important that a puppy’s needs and wants are met. He must receive plenty of attention and he must feel love and security. Aggressive behavior can happen if your dog is bored and boredom comes from lack of attention. If your dog only receives attention when he acts aggressively then his aggressive behavior is being rewarded. When your dog is bored negative attention is as much of a reward as positive attention.  No attention is worse than negative attention. You can help stop dog aggression by giving your dog adequate attention and by training him in a positive way.

Your dog should be exercised regularly. A puppy is full of youthful energy and needs space and opportunities to run and play. Small apartment size dogs and older dogs need plenty of exercise as well.

Your puppy will learn the wrong behavior if he is allowed to run freely with neighborhood dogs. The best playmates for your puppy are mature, well-behaved dogs.

Leaving a dog on his own, without guidance, will lead to bad habits. You help your dog curb his aggressive nature with positive training. Through proper training your dog’s attention will be focused on you instead of other dogs and people. Your dog will follow your commands in any situation if you are consistent in training your dog.

What About Older Dogs?

Puppies are a clean slate and open to learning. What about an older dog? Constant, consistent effort is needed to correct an older dog’s bad habits. Any aggressive behavior by an older dog must be handled immediately. Your dog will not understand your response if you wait to reprimand him. He will only know that he feels bad. Repeatedly correct your dogs negative actions until he understands the correct response in a particular situation.

Dogs have developed an instinctual aggressive-it is a part of their very nature. Dogs are pack animals that have evolved with aggression in order to be able to hunt down their prey and defend themselves and their pack against predators. Of course the evolution of dogs necessitated their aggressive instincts, but in today’s world a dog with aggression problems must be controlled. • Dominance Aggression: Upon meeting each other, two dogs will always sort out who is dominant. Dogs are pack animals, and developed a hierarchy system in order to maintain peace among the various pack members. Usually, two dogs go through this process without aggression problems. If one of the dogs refuses to submit to the other dog it is possible for a dog fight to soon occur.

• Fear Aggression: The next type of aggression, fear aggression is caused by very different reasons than dominance aggression. In the case of fear aggression the dog is so overcome with anxiety that it may lash out at whatever is causing its fear. One example would be of a dog who has suffered previous abuse by a human will sometimes show his fear aggression by being afraid of certain people. A dog suffering from fear aggression shows it by cringing low down with his tail up between his legs and agaisnt his stomach; he will also whine and moan and may snap and lunge to bite at the source of his torment; It will be baring all its teeth while snarling, whining and moaning. Because the dog might also snap its teeth and lunge at anything nearby, you want to avoid trying to comfort a dog in this state.

• Territorial Aggression: Aggressive behavior over territory is a very common reason for a dog becoming aggressive. It is a natural occurrence and stems from a dog’s instinct to protect his den and his pack-which these days are your house and your family. However, if your dog is overly protective and  becomes too aggressive, it is possible that he may even bite visitors (especially strangers) and attack other dogs or animals nearby. If you see signs of territorial aggression  with your dog  you should take steps to take control. You can’t allow your dog’s aggressive barking to turn into actual biting.

• Redirected Aggression: Redirected aggression is a type of behavior that may seem confusing at first.  Sometimes a commotion may happen on the other side of your fence that stops your dogs from reaching it, and in their fury they may sometimes attack each other. Kind of like when sharks have a frenzy. The grip of the aggression got so strong that they even attacked their own buddy.

• Predatory Aggression: Predatory aggression is a natural instinct that all dogs have to some degree-they are born with it. If you have a dog or a cat and live in the countryside you probably already witness predatory aggression all the time. Predatory aggression is often expressed by our dogs when they chase a cat or another dog or a bird. sometimes dogs enjoy something just for the fun of the chase and are not really aggressive in a predatory sense. If the chasing is more serious and not just for the thrill of the chase, your aggressive dog could  cause serious damage, so be sure to correct this type of aggressive behavior.

• Medical Reasons Causing Aggression: An example of this would be the aggressive natures of some female dogs that are either pregnant or are taking care of a litter of puppies. If your dog is not feeling good physically it could cause him to be easily irritated and more aggressive than usual.If your dog is suddenly acting aggressive although he usually isn’t that way, you should have him checked with the vet for a medical issue. Some dogs just have some bad wiring, and have no one obvious reason for their aggression. I am sure you have met people like that too-it is just the way they are put together.

Many owners of pets had this frequently seen problem for decades together ; fighting the aggression in dogs and keeping it under control.  If you understand the theorem as to what causes dogs to be assertive and how to control it, then the chances of not being a victim of dog aggression is high.  It is astounding that dog bites cost the healthcare industry $30 million annually.

Hormonal imbalances are due to inbreeding by some scrupulous dog breeders.  They do not take excellent care of the dogs and in an effort to make a quick buck, resort to inbreeding.  As well as causing high levels of aggression in dogs, this is also unhealthy and can have serious physical effects on the dog too. 

The environment that the dog is being raised in is also a major contributor to aggression in dogs.  If the dog is being punished pointlessly, or being showered attention for no reason, or is the topic of teasing by passersby and youngsters, then these are all in charge of higher levels of aggression in dogs.

Additionally, aggression can also be classified into different sorts based on the dog’s demeanor.  The defensive aggression in dogs is when the dog is awfully frightened of the person or animal and attacks in retaliation.  This is one of the commonest forms of aggression. 

The territorial aggression is the form of aggression where animals or people outside of the known circle approach the dog’s area and make it feel threatened.  On the other hand, agony prompted aggression, as the name says, is when the dog is attacking something that causes it discomfort like other animals or folks.  There is a possibility that a mixture of aggression in dogs can exist and hence, it is safe to chop down the causes before jumping the van. 

Sadly, a large number of owners of pets mistake aggression in dogs to be an unexplained behavior change.  They fail to realize what caused the dog to behave the manner it did and hastily send it away to animal shelters.  If you take the time and understand, then it is possible that there’s something your dear pet may be attempting to say.
