Dachshunds are one of the most lovable breeds in the whole canine kingdom, recognized for their curiosity, playfulness and boundless energy. They are mischievous and are also really capable in getting away with their crazy antics, especially when they’re young. But they will be incredibly loyal and have remained such a popular breed on account of their many wonderful characteristics. But dachshund enthusiasts who wish to train their much loved pal also face a very tough job. Dachshunds are naturally obstinate and they are considered as one of the most difficult dog breeds to teach. As such, dachshund puppy training needs to be undertaken with a lot of affection, firmness and patience.

Beginning dachshund puppy training

When you are starting the training, arm yourself with a lot of patience, consistency, firmness and especially, love. Bear in mind that your dog is an animal with totally different instincts and also a distinctive way of evaluating things. The dog should be in a position to look at you and see a pack leader. If he does not, you can be sure that with the dachshund’s take-charge style, he will attempt (and end up) the dominant dog.

Exercising your dog

Dachshunds must be active to encourage them to use up their extra energies and you can actually help them do this by taking them out for walks. Work with a puppy leash to keep them exactly where they need to be. If you prefer, use a harness or even a retractable leash to gain much more control.

Potty training

A puppy will need to relieve himself about six times per day. Immediately after meals, take your puppy outdoors to eliminate however bring him to the place where you want him to do it. When he does, give him a lot of praise. In the event you keep your puppy in a kennel crate, do the same in the morning then permit him to play before his first meal. Repeat the elimination exercise and then put the puppy in the crate once again. About an hour later, bring him out to eliminate. He will learn over time that he needs to do his business when taken out.

Do not force your puppy to eliminate, however. If he doesn’t just bring him back in, wait awhile and then take him back again. Repeat this process until he’s housebroken. The method holds true even with newspaper training in the house.

Obedience training

Train the puppy using brief sessions of 10 to 15 minutes but do this often, say 2 to 3 times every day. Always reinforce good behavior with praise or treats and also be firm about bad behavior. At some point, using this dachshund puppy training your dog will learn all the positive behaviors you would like it to acquire.

Dachshund training is said to be tricky but that is not supposed to dissuade you from having a dachshund for a pet. In spite of their obstinate personality and intense desire to pursue small animals, dachshunds make good companions due to their devotion and loyalty to their owners. It is just up to the owner to find out ways on how to reveal the best in his dachshund pet dog.

You, being the owner, can in fact pick the training method you deem perfect for your furry companion – positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement or punishment-based dog training, many veterinarians and dog experts strongly recommend positive reinforcement. When training, you also have to make sure that your pet responds to the command regardless of the location. Knowing how to sit or stay is pointless if he only exhibit the behavior in the family room. Obedience dachshund training is truly useful if he knows how to respond to each command in different areas specifically outdoors where he is at risk of getting hit by car or running away from you to chase rabbits.

Once your pet mastered a particular skill indoors, it’s time to train him to do it outdoors. Begin in your backyard or any area where there’s less distraction. Allow him off leash to explore the area only if it’s enclosed with a fence to keep your pet safe. Be reminded that dachshunds belong with the hound family and were originally developed to scent, chase, hunt and flush burrow-dwelling animals so it is not surprising if you will notice your new pet running from one side of the area to another trying to find his prey. Then add distractions one at a time. Request a member of family or a neighbor to be in the area, let that person play ball or request him to bike near the training area.

As the distractions increase, your dog’s resistance against them also increases. When this happens, you can carry out dachshund training in other locations like dog parks and other places where dogs are allowed.

When training outdoors, make sure to prioritize your pet’s safety, train with caution in other words.

As predicted, the title of this article hints of the large amount of effort and time about to be spent on dachshund training and the dog. Indeed, dachshunds were born to dig and to bark at quarry. So the problem is how to persuade the dog that its time is better spent elsewhere.

Some owners who think there is simply no time to teach the dog what’s allowed and otherwise, just pick up the dog. This obviously is no better than intervening into the problem, but only to end it as if nothing happened.

The dachshund’s infamous recipe of stubbornness is rooted in its excellent memory and hunting history-inspired tenacity. Putative punishment thus don’t get anywhere, as the dog breed is under the impression that no brute-force training can win it over. This leaves you a Dachshund training that is based on rewards, which is anyway the most effective and also the most efficient.

The solution to start dachshund training is to give them convincing motives to do things your way. Meanwhile it needs to be clear on you that this albeit doe-eyed and sweet dog has its own food-related interests in mind and in first place always. Indeed, if this was not the case, there would be lesser obese dachshunds the world over. So this is just one of the many facts you can use to your advantage in dachshund training.

How about barking? If your dachshund is about to enter a situation that is sure to unleash a torrent of voicing, you may want to let it know it gets a treat for not barking in that particular place, or setting. For example, by lightly holding their muzzle while telling them not to bark, and then showing the treat, it’s possible to reinforce the correct behavior.

The next time around you see your dog not barking in a situation, praise it then give it a reward. To end, barking is an instinctual feature for the breed. Thus it is only to be expected that it will take lots of early Dachshund training and socializing before the dog understands what in general are you driving at.

Discouragement against digging are ordinarily a combination of physical barriers, and among many examples of these blocks are blackberry brambles, or alternative channels for the dog’s energies. More importantly, a good start to anti-digging or anti-barking plans is a well-exercised dog, or a busy dog of multiple owner-initiated activities.

The first time your dachshund gets home, you owe it the lesson of where it could properly relieve itself. But a lot of effort will go to this, since the breed is known to be stubborn and willful. If you want the dog to fully own up housebreaking (and to give dachshund training), you will have to make the dog think it is the owner of this cool idea.

The dachshund happen to also like treats, so treats need to be part of your Dachshund training regime. For example, dogs born in the spring can often be trained with the fresh fruits of summer if these are ripe enough.

The first thing that needs remembering when it comes to housebreaking is that the dog must never form the vice of taking a leak inside the house. If you see a puppy sniffing and circling a spot on the floor, then that spot is a potential place where it might pee.

Many dachshund owners crate-train their dog in order to prevent accidents like this. If not, the next alternative is to bring the puppy out every few minutes, and to give it a treat when it does relieve itself on the spot agreed on.

Now here is a critical detail that no dog owner can miss: what to do when you spot a mess in the house, and it is obvious the dog did it. Nevertheless, there is no sense or point in admonishing a dog for a mess that happened even only a minute ago (by then, it is already some meters away, which means it doesn’t have a clue what your ranting is for). Dogs cannot simply understand what the blaming is for. The solution? Catch the dog in the act, so that it can be told about what it is doing, and picked up and brought outside.

Another Dachshund training method that has its share of supporters is the paper training. In this method, an entire floor in a room is covered with newspapers and the puppy is free to pee or poo in any paper-covered area. Each day, the papers are removed bit by bit, until such time that the dog can only relieve itself in a section of the papers that is distinctly in the middle of the room. Then, this last remaining section is moved outside, with the assumption that the dog will look for it outside when it wants to relieve itself.

In case you also go for paper training , then be ready to have a room in your house watered daily by dog urine for around ten days to as much as three weeks. It is also being presumed here that your dog understands the link between the urge and the act.

Crate training needs the dog to adjust its lifestyle as the crate requires it to do, holding its pee or poo, controlling its time for sleep, etc. The hunt for the correct crate size for a dachshund can be quite a challenge, so stay sharp!

By keeping the crate door open while the puppy is out, dogs are given the chance to appreciate sleeping or hiding in the crate, even if they would aim for the plush and soft sofa if made to choose. Crating a dachshund pup while you are out will also keep the dog away from committing any mischief.

In any event, you need a strategy that entails plenty of praise, and also plenty of patience that helps the dog reduces its mistakes.

Arguably more than other dog breeds, a poorly socialized dachshund has the greatest likelihood of developing fear baiting, which hints of a dog that dreads interaction, than appreciating it. Owners usually cannot explain their dog’s aggressive demeanor just prior to beating it, or rolling over in submission. Moreover, without dachshund training, your dog may even have a great deal of anxiety bottled up inside.

The foremost step in Dachshund training for a dachshund puppy is to give it plenty of socializing opportunities as much as possible. This is as simple as taking the dog around the neighborhood. You also need to keep the dog protected from being dominated on, but not necessarily coddling. A physical attack on a twice-small dachshund puppy could leave much more scars than what is seen.

Naturally, even dogs that belong to the same litter will always have diverse temperaments. Some dachshund puppies are fearful owing to their young instincts, but there is usually some critical point that cements the concern. If there is a way that breeders can help stamp out these tendencies, it would be by observing carefully the puppies as a group for their first few weeks. It does not help at all if the smallest pups are kept away from the others.

How can it be known if a dog is biting out of aggression or due to fear? If the ears stick to the back of the head rather than forward during a tense moment, then the dog has the makings of a fear biter. It is all the more possible if the dog is ordinarily submissive around dogs it is familiar with.

Fear biters most of the time are housed nowadays in shelters, and carry histories of abuse. Most breeders recommend that these dogs need to be altered by their owners as soon as possible. Breeding them is clearly out of the question, much less getting them to join trials and show rings.

It is therefore clear that a dachshund given to fear baiting will rely heavily on tons of its owner’s understanding and patience. Shouting at a fearful dachshund, if it also bears the bad luck of submissive urination, therefore ought to be among the last things a sensible owner will do.

Also not among the least of your worries in Dachshund training is how to remedy the self-esteem of a dog which is among the most obstinate that a trainer could encounter.

The challenge that all owners are up against is to know the trigger of the fear in the dog. Keep in mind that all animals are sight-oriented, but that they are more prone to focusing on very specific things such as people with bright clothes. Again, it is essential to never blow your top over a dog’s behavior, regardless of how bad it is behaving. There are always more effective and subtle ways for you to get across to the dog your displeasure.
