Using Clicker Training on Dogs

What works for adult dogs is effective for young puppies as well.As is the standard in dog training, the reason for clicker training is to have dogs associate the sound of the click with a certain behavior, hopefully positive.

Before proceeding, seeCanis Clickertraining for more information.

Why behavior education holds clicker training is high esteem is no surprise. The sound of the click marks the specific moment your dog has successfully complied with a command; it lets him know what exactly you’re giving him treats for.

How the Clicking Works.

Perhaps because of positive feedback, you’d now like to learn how clicker training works so you can use it on your little furry friend or to teach your dear old companion some fancy new tricks. The clicker training is a reward system - allowing your dog to associate the click with rewards for bidding your command. When training your dog to sit on command, you can deliberately push his rump downward while saying, “Sit.”.As soon as his bottom bumps solid ground, click then reward him with a treat.Do this several times.Soon, your pet understands the click, the command and the treat come together.

Find an informative article on How To Teach Dog Tricks.

Dog Clicker Training.

To see is to believe; try it and be convinced.Be warned however, that when you start using the clicker on your dog, don’t forget to.

Give your dog a treat every time you allow him hear the clicking sound. The clicker is a prop for training. You should not use it beyond of training sessions. When your dog shows understanding by doing as you say, you can put the clicker aside.

Persist.Animals differ in intelligence, as you and I do.Their intelligence notwithstanding, dogs are not as smart as humans. It’s logical to not have high expectations of a dog especially if this is their first time being trained.Don’t drive yourself and your dog too hard.

End every training session on a good note.Your dog will recall the last thing you did on the session. If things don’t go as planned, don’t let it end with your dog feeling bad; he’d be reluctant to try again. To ensure the session ends with your dog feeling hopeful, revert to an old command you know he has mastered well.Run him through the sit command two more times before you say the session is over for the day.Don’t forget to click and give him a treat. He’d be looking forward to more training session.

Be Precise.

Since clicker training is all about timing, you want to be precise.Your dog needs your timing to be perfect to easily associate the commands with the sound of the clicks.Prior to introducing the clicker to your dog, practice your clicks.

Clicker training goes back to the 1930’s. Clicker training is the use of sound to strengthen desired behavior through positive reinforcement. The training of dolphins is an example of the use of clicker training techniques by marine biologists. However, in training dolphins an air horn was used instead of a clicker because sound is muffled the deeper a dolphin went underwater. Since dolphins quickly understood the tasks they were expected to perform these training techniques were considered to be very successful. Today clicker training is being used to train almost every animal imaginable; dogs, cats, birds, horses, as well as wild animals.

Clicker training has one main difference from traditional dog training. Often traditional dog training focuses on reprimanding bad. Clicker training rewards good actions and ignores all bad behavior. Clicker training is based on the principle that animals who are being trained want to please their trainers. If an animal exhibits bad behavior it is usually the result of ineffective communication by his trainer.

If clicker training is of interest to you I highly recommend this fantastic guide. Click on: Learn How to Clicker Train Your Dog

What is a Clicker?

Clickers, that will do the job, are simple, inexpensive mechanical devices that make an identical sound every time they are pressed. Used properly a clicker will motivate an animal to repeatedly complete specific tasks.

Basics of Clicker Training

Using conditioned reinforcement an animal learns to control the click, and accompanying reward, by performing as requested. An animal’s training accelerates as soon as he realizes he can control the click of the clicker. Using conditioned reinforcement this understanding will eventually occur with all animals.

Since dogs are intelligent they quickly understand that they are able to control the click of the clicker. Dogs soon understand that the click sound is telling them they have done a good job and deserve a treat. A dog quickly develops various skills when the techniques and principles of clicker training are utilized.

Since your dog’s ability to focus is limited training sessions should be short, less than 15 minutes. Short training sessions can be repeated a number of times through the day. When you show your dog the task you want done and he performs that task the clicker clicks and a treat is given to your dog. The trainer gently moves your dog through the desired task and soon your dog will perform the task without having to hear a click or receive a treat.

Clicker training helps your dog learn, think and adapt. Training is faster with clicker training because your dog is more motivated to learn and it is easier for them to understand the task you want them to perform.

Clicker Training Prevents Confusion In Your Family

When a dog receives mixed signals from family members he becomes confused. Clicker training can prevent confusion. All members of a family, including young children, can quickly understand the concepts behind clicker training. When a clicker trained dog exhibits bad behavior he can be encouraged, by any family member, to correct his behavior with a signal or command accompanied by the clicker. All family members understand what they are to do which leads to better communication with your dog.

Clicker Training is a Win/Win Situation

The relationship between you and your dog is made stronger through clicker training. You and your dog become more responsive to each other. This enhanced relationship creates a strong bond between your dog and the trainer.

Clicker training is fun. Tasks are learned quickly, by your dog, because of clear communication. You will find it enjoyable because you quickly see results of the training sessions. It is a win/win situation for both you and your dog.

Have you ever asked yourself “Is my dog aggressive“? If you have then you probably have good reason to think your dog is aggressive. If you are noticing that you dog is aggressive you have a couple options that are available to you for handling it.

The first of your options would be to just get rid of your dog (this is not recommended). While this is not the option most people choose it is something some people do. If you do decide that you want to get rid of your dog then make sure you find him a safe home. You should never just let your dog go out the door. Dogs are no longer breed to be wild animals so they would be truly unsafe out on their own.

A better option would be to get your dog trained or train him yourself. There are a variety of classes you can take your dog to and there are private dog trainers most everywhere.

Clicker training is an excellent way to go about training an aggressive dog. When done properly, clicker training can help you see a major improvement in your dog’s behavior. What makes clicker training so wonderful is that after a bit you will be able to give your dog commands that he will follow without the use of the clicker or dog treats.

Timing is everything when using the clicker dog training method. If you do not get this right then you will be basically wasting your time and effort.

The moment that your dog follows your command you need to click and give him a treat. If you wait to long the dog will not understand what behavior got them the treat he will just know that he is very lucky because you are excited and feeding him yummy treats.

You also should keep the clicker tucked in your hand so your dog can not see it. You can also click with your tongue instead of the clicker after your dog has gotten used to the clicking.

Regardless of how you plan on training your dog you should always use positive training methods. Not only will negative methods hurt your dog but he is likely to become worse behaved over time.

What’s dog clicker training?

If you are willing to train your dog you might consider using the ‘dog clicker training’ method, which has recently become popular among dog trainers all over the world.    In this method the trainer has to make use of a clicker, a small plastic box with a metal button that makes a unique click sound once the button has been pushed.

The training method is not only simple but also quite similar to the positive training method. This is what you have to do. Make up your mind as to what behaviour you want to reinforce or teach your dog. A dog will naturally perform certain actions such as eating, barking, sitting, standing, etc. and these need just to be reinforced to let your dog know when you want him/her to do what.

Several other actions such as acting dead, shaking hands, rolling over,do not come naturally to the dog and need to be taught.

Clicker training can be used to do both.

Clicker training functions according to the basic principles of operant conditioning, that is, by associating the sound of the clicker with some food which the dog particularly enjoys.

Now all you must do is use the clicker to command the dog to do something, the dog, given that he associates the click with the reward, immediately obliges and the training is complete.

Let’s take an example to explain the training of a dog with a clicker better, suppose you want to teach your dog to sit, you put a biscuit on your dog’s nose playfully and then move it upwards, the dog will obviously follow the movement of the cookie with its nose and will then naturally rest its haunches on the floor, thereby putting himself in a sitting position.

You must time your clicking to be so accurate as to occur right as the dog seats, and then give him/her the biscuit and praise it.

Go on doing this for some time till the dog starts to associate the clicking with the food until the click makes your dog sit without you luring him/her with treats.

Now teach him/her some other behavior, remembering to attach the clicking cue only once the animal himself produces the expected behavior, otherwise the clicking will not be connected to any particular behavior and the dog will be confused as to what it means.

Your dog is a clever little animal and it’s time you gave him/her the credit it deserves.

Some trainers have been known to use negative reinforcement techniques alongside the clicker method but this simply doesn’t work because punishment always creates a number of cases of unwanted behavior even if it serves the primary purpose of teaching the dog not to do something temporarily.

Any sort of training is a strenuous and rigorous process and needs time as well as patience.

Even though dog clicker training method is highly successful in general it might not work for some kinds of dogs, if you see that it’s not working for your pet you would be well advised to use some other technique to teach tricks to your dog.

Puppy II is a class for 4-9 month old puppies. This is our most repeated class as it falls at the onset of ‘adolescence’. We spend a great deal of time with socialization, capturing calm, and polite public manners. Owners are encouraged to spend time each day with their pups socializing to people, places, things, events and other well socialized appropriate dogs. Training each day, and working on capturing calm and ‘play-settle’. Structure and mangement count for everything during this developmental stage!
