Dogo Argentino

The Argentine Dogo is a large, white, game-bred, muscular dog that was developed in Argentina for the protection of families against Puma attacks, and very well suited for big-game hunting.Dogos are known for being extremely loyal and affectionate with their families and crave attention from their owners. They are excessively tolerant of children due to their high pain tolerance, derived from selective breeding to be a big game hunter. They are protective of what they perceive as their territory and will guard it against any intruder. They get along with other dogs as long as they have been properly socialized, but will usually not tolerate another dog trying to assert dominance over them and might not coexist peacefully with another dominant breed of dog. However, dog aggression is not desirable in the Dogo Argentino, as it is at odds with its intended purpose as a pack hunter.Dogo Argentinos are accomplished big-game hunters, and are still widely used today in a variety of ways from tracking, search and rescue, Schutzhund training, general police work including narcotics detection, military, and family dog. They are even occasionally used as guide dogs, or as service animals. The Dogo Argentino was bred specifically to avoid the dog aggression problems inherent in the Cordoba Fighting Dog when applied to hunting, specifically its lack of ability to hunt in a pack. The creators of the breed took great care to prevent this undesirable trait from manifesting in the Dogo Argentino, as the breed was always intended to be a pack hunter.Dogos can develop an aggressive or dominant temperament if not socialized with other dogs at an early age, particularly with other dogs of the same sex, but can be trained by an experienced handler. However, some Dogos are bred for dog fighting. Dogos of these lines are extremely aggressive and not suited for big game hunting, unlike the original Dogo Argentino. These Dogos are somewhat smaller than the ones used for big-game hunting weighting between 75 and 90 lb. In some rare cases, they are cross-bred with the American Pit Bull Terrier. In the United Kingdom it is illegal to own Argentine Dogos without specific exemption from a court per the 1991 Dangerous Dogs Act. The Australian government has banned the importation of this dog.In the 1930s in Argentina, Antonio Nores Martinez set out to breed the ultimate big game hunting dog, a dog not only capable of taking on dangerous game such as wild boar and cougars, but a dog also capable of being a loyal pet and family guardian.Martinez picked the Cordoba Fighting Dog to be the base for the breed. This breed is extinct today but was described as a large and ferocious dog that was both a great hunter and fighter. He crossed it with Great Dane, Boxer, Spanish Mastiff, Old English Bulldog, Bull Terrier, Great Pyrenees, Pointer, Irish Wolfhound and Dogue de Bordeaux. Martinez kept improving the resulting breed via selective breeding to introduce the desired traits. The first standard for the Dogo Argentino was written in 1928.

Dog Nail Grooming- Shall You Do It?

Dog grooming is essential for our dog. Dog grooming can be done at home or by a professional. Although when dog grooming is about nails, there is a bit more what should be known…
Dog nail grooming requires the use of clippers, grinders and files, which are normally used for nail trimming. Clippers are available in many sizes and models, it is all about choosing the model that best suits your dog’s needs. Medium-sized clippers usually work on all breeds except for very large dogs. Grinders offer an alternative to clippers that lots of groomers prefer, and which should definitely prove suitable for a wide range of dog nail grooming applications.

Grinders smooth off edges while clippers cut. Both tools can be used in parallel or in support of each other because dog nail grooming is complex and sometimes risky. There is a guard attached to some clippers which prevents cutting too much nail, nevertheless, this feature partly blocks vision and you could cut tissues close to the nail without realizing it. Such accidents are frequent in home grooming because of the wrong use of tools.

More advanced equipment for dog nail grooming stems the bleeding and cauterizes the vein if the clippers touch it. The problem with dog nail grooming is that you have to be very careful and maximize the dog’s comfort, or you risk to make the animal nervous and agitated, thus reducing the chances of trimming the nails properly.

Even so, dog nail grooming should not be neglected. Without trimming or the chance to smooth the nails against the ground, a pet that lives mainly indoors will suffer when the nails get too long. Improperly trimmed nails also carry the risk of ingrown nails, which are both painful and uncomfortable. If you can hear the dog’s nails clicking against the floor, then, you should cut them right away.

When the dog has too brittle nails to cut by normal dog nail grooming methods, filing or grinding is the alternative that avoids the formation of splinters. The dog’s disposition and tolerance are very important for nail trimming. Don’t attempt at cutting them all at once; breaks are usually necessary in order to allow the animal to relax. Because of the discomfort, it is very likely for a dog to bit his master during dog nail grooming.

With many pets it takes a lot of time to get used to nail trimming. Tolerance can be helped with careful handling, but this doesn’t always work. Try the reward system and give your pet a tiny treat after each nail cut. This may help you complete the task more rapidly and without incidents.
