Understanding About Puppy Mills

Puppy mills are commercial dog-breeding operations - some on a massive scale, other people are Mom-Pop backyard, basement or garage set-ups. It doesn’t matter which. Profit is offered precedence over quality. The physical, mental and social properly getting from the puppies and reproduction stock puppies are not important.

Responsible breeders place priority on producing the healthiest, happiest, and most well adjusted puppies achievable; sparing no expense. There is NO consideration of genetic quality, mental/physical health, and/or socialization. Puppy mills are shocking. The truth there exists not a lot more outcry to shut them down, and punish the owners, is reprehensible. There is small to no concern for that health and nicely being of breeding stock dogs or their puppies. The goal is always to get as quite a few young puppies out of the reproduction pair as cheaply as possible. Quality food can be an unnecessary expense.

I hear more and more about pup mills everyday. It makes me sick to my stomach, and it makes my heart hurt. It is honestly just sad. How could any regular human being run, a lot less work at a puppy mill? It puts me at a loss for words. A pup mill is frequently a business, a facility that’s designed purely for profit, not to the well-being of dogs.

The propagation combinations are despicable. Mothers are bred with sons. Fathers are bred with daughters. Brothers bred with sisters. Aunts bred with nephews. Cousins bred with cousins. The sole purpose of your puppy mill would be to get rid of as several puppies to the highest price possible.

These dogs obtain tiny or no veterinary care and by no means see a bed, treat, toy, and certainly not go on walks. After their fertility wanes, breeding animals are commonly killed, abandoned or marketed to an additional mill. The result of all this propagation is thousands and thousands of puppies, numerous with behavior and/or wellbeing problems. They are usually three to five canines to 1 tiny cage. They start going crazy at times and just pace back and forth or run in circles.

Sadly, countless young puppies are culled (killed, commonly inhumanely) for such defects as misshaped ears, tails, or legs. They are also destroyed for obvious breed disqualifications including wrong coat color or pattern or incorrect eye color. Mosquitoes burst out and thrive around pup mill, not to mention flies, maggots, lice, mites and ticks!

Typically pup mill young puppies are offered through what is called a Class B broker and/or middleman to flea markets, on-line web sites and pet shops. The majority certainly not acquire them…others are falsified.

The bulk of them are overcrowded, illness ridden, unsanitary and ruthless. Most often, the reproduction stock once “used up”, if not slaughtered inhumanely or sold to investigation labs, will live the rest their short lives caged in unsafe, and unsanitary conditions. They will acquire the least amount of low quality food required to sustain them.

Even on the outside chance the reproduction stock and their puppies end up in the hands of a Class B broker, they’ll receive tiny or no veterinary care, often leading to critical medical problems.

WTHR - Indiana’s Puppy Pipeline Part 2

While puppies from commercial breeding operations are sold to pet stores, their parents are often left behind. Those dogs usually live their adult lives in a cage.

So what happens to dogs that can no longer produce puppies? What do commercial breeders do with those?

Kim Townsend, a dog breeding industry researcher, says many of those dogs become the forgotten victims of the Puppy Pipeline.

“A lot of them just stay in the same cage until they die,” Townsend said. “They just linger.”

Uncle Bill’s gets most of its puppies from commercial dog breeders in Daviess County, Ind. That area is home to dozens of commercial breeders who supply thousands of puppies to central Indiana pet stores.

Pitbull

“The American Pit Bull Terrier was first recognized by the United Kennel Club (UKC) in the late 19th century. The UKC was the first registry to do so, with U.K.C. founder C.Z. Bennett assigning U.K.C. registration number 1 to his own APBT, Bennett’s Ring in 1898. It should be noted that the American Pit Bull Terrier was also the first breed to be registered by the organization.

In recent years, the American Pit Bull Terrier’s image has been tarnished by frequent media coverage concerning dog-fighting rings and attacks on humans. Advocates of the breed argue that irresponsible or neglectful owners as well as media sensationalism are largely to blame for this reputation.

History
———-

Although the exact history of the breed of dog known as the American Pit Bull Terrier is unknown it is generally agreed that they are descended from bull-and-terrier crosses brought to America from England and Ireland in the 1800s. The Bull and Terrier type dogs were created by crossing the English working Bulldog with English hunting Terriers. The Bulldog that is the ancestor of the APBT was used for many types of work including baiting, fighting, stock work, hunting, and as a farm dog. When bull-baiting was outlawed in England in by the Cruelty to Animals act in 1835 along with dogfighting, illegal dogfighting gained popularity since it is much easier to organize and conceal than a bull-baiting contest.

Fighting dogs were bred for strength, speed and gameness, or the willingness to see a task through to its conclusion regardless of serious threat of injury or death. While fighting dogs in England were not necessarily a singular breed of dog but rather a type of dog bred for gameness from different stock, in the USA the breed solidified and was named the American Pit Bull Terrier. Breeders knew that a dog like this could be dangerous to people and difficult to control if it were aggressive toward people, so breeders would look for the crucial trait of nonaggression towards humans. Fighting dogs that showed aggression towards its owner or handler were routinely killed and thus removed from the gene pool. This resulted a line of strong dogs that, while aggressive towards dogs and other animals, would be much gentler with people.

In the late 1800s to early 1900s, two clubs were formed for the specific purpose of registering APBTs: the United Kennel Club and the American Dog Breeder’s Association. The United Kennel Club was founded with the registration of an American Pit Bull Terrier and was the first registry to recognize the breed.

As dog fighting declined in popularity in the United States in the early 20th century, many dog owners wanted to legitimize the breed and distance it from its fighting roots. The name “Staffordshire Terrier” was adopted by some owners and was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1936. Later, the word “American” was added to reduce confusion with its smaller British cousin, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Not all breeders, however, agreed with the standard adopted by the AKC, and continued to use the name American Pit Bull Terrier for their lines. Much confusion still remains in regards to the APBT, the AST, and the SBT. Once an extremely popular family dog in the United States (in fact, the dog in the Our Gang aka The Little Rascals movies and in Buster Brown was an APBT), the American Pit Bull Terrier’s popularity began to decline in the United States following World War II in favor of other breeds.

CHICKADEE & PISTOL 2009 - 3) 3 Weeks Old, Their 1st Meal
THE FIRST MEAL: Do you want to see something really cute? Watch 3 1/2 week old puppies eat, real food, for the first time. This is Chickadee & Pistol 2009 litter of 8 puppies. You will see how the puppies have developed in just 1 week. This week their eyes and ears have opened. They now can hear and see their mother.
I have invited the new adoptive families to come and see the puppies eat their first, real food, meal. I have taken Chickadee away from the puppies about 1 hour before starting the feeding. I want them to be a little hungry.
I take the food that I’m going to feed the puppies and add warm water to it, about an hour before I plan on feeding. Once it is soft I put it in a blender and make a mash or peplum out of it. I add warm water until I get the right soft pudding texture. I want it a little soupy so it is easy for the puppies to eat.
With the new families all present, I put down the bowl of food and the fun begins. I very gently touch the mussel of each puppy to the food. They usually push away from the food, them taste it and come pushing forward. The puppies don’t understand how to find the food. They don’t understand the concept of raising their heads up over the edge of the bowl. You have to help them. The puppies will eat off of each other, finding ears, feet and anything else that feels like a nipple. Remember, up until this time, food has always come from their mothers nipples. They walk through the bowl and smear food from head to toe.
Once the puppies are done eating, I bring Chickadee back to them and she will clean them up. I make sure that they all get inside so that they don’t get cold from wear their food or the washing that their mother will give them.
The mother’s registered name is Spirits Pick Me Chickadee and the father’s name is Shorelands Pistol Pete II CD MX MXJ NF. I breed Golden Retriever and Labrador Retriever in Redmond, WA. I have been Breeding, Training, and Showing in AKC, CKC, UKC Obedience & Agility trials for over 35 years. I love raising puppies and teaching people how to live with dogs. I have bred some of the top Obedience dogs in the US & Canada including the #1 All Breed Dog in Canada for 2008, GMOTCH, Am, OTCH SPIRIT’S ZIM ZAM ZOOM UDX3. My dogs are very athletic, love to swim, hike and are very intelligent. They make wonderful family members and are great with children. If you are look for a new family member, you won’t go wrong with one of my dogs. All of my breeding stock have OFA clearance on Hips & Elbows, CERF yearly on eyes, have been tested for PRA and have Heart clearances. I hope you enjoy my Videos and Channel.
