Dog Language And Beagle Puppy Training

THIS IS AWESOME! My favorite dog trainer and dog whisperer of all time has just released a free video online explaining how to eliminate 94% of all unwanted behavior in ANY dog. Her name is Krista Cantrell and I absolutely LOVE the way she teaches. Click on the video to watch. You'll be glad you did...

Beagle puppy training should be a enjoyable experience for the pet since it is one of the most critical stages of his life. What he discovered and experienced during this period will greatly affect his adult life and how he reacts to all sorts of circumstances when the time comes. While successful training is not attained by only batting your eyelash, there are various steps you can take to reach your goal of having a well-behaved pup - the first step should be to discover how to understand your canine friend better.

Considering that dogs cannot speak the way human does, you need to be wise and mindful enough to assess your dog’s body language. Listed below are a few of the most common acts of saying or showing:

Confidence
With tail wagging gently, a confident dog stands tall and the head held high. The ears are usually perked up and the eyes are bright.

Fear
A frightened dog is quite seen with lowered stance and tail down or concealed between his legs. The ears are flat back while the eyes are narrow and may look away or turns head away. In an effort to defend himself, he may bark, whines, growls and might even bare his teeth. Urinating or defecating as well as shaking can also be seen from a frightened dog.

Dominance
Dog training can be a bit difficult if you are dealing with a dominant dog. With great confidence, a dominant dog stands tall, eyes are wide open, ears are up and even the hair on his back may stand. Tension can be possibly felt since a dominant dog can become less friendly and frightening.

Playfulness or happiness
A playful or happy dog is not hard to determine. He is frequently seen with perky ears, merry-looking eyes and relaxed mouth. The entire body is relaxed and is excitedly bouncing and jumping up and down and of course, the tail is wagging vigorously.

By knowing these acts or behaviors, you’ll be one step nearer to attaining successful beagle puppy training.

How To Use Treats During Beagle Training

Though beagles are intelligent dogs, beagle training can be hard because of their single-mindedness and dedication. These fantastic scent hounds are easily distracted by smells thus you might find it hard to recall them if they’ve picked up a scent. But despite that, successful training can be made possible with proper training approach.

One approach you can use is treat training. With sense of smell just like theirs, having them obey your commands wouldn’t be a problem. Who can resist that yummy-smelling pieces of cheese or hotdog, anyway?

While others believe that treat training is a form of bribery, a lot more believe that it’s a proven way to motivate a dog to demonstrate the behavior he was rewarded for. For instance if you reward your beagle with a treat for responding to your come command, it will make him figure out that he gets something good for doing that particular thing thereby motivates him to get it done once again the next time you ask him to do so. With rewards, you’re giving the treat after the deed has been done while with bribery, you are showing the treat to your dog prior to the execution of the command. While bribery in dog terms isn’t that great of a problem, doing so can help him develop the habit of obeying only when there is food or treat found. To avoid bribery during dog training, the best thing for you to do is to conceal the treats prior to giving the command and give it to him only after successful performance. For example if you’re training the sit or down command, it’ll help if you keep the treat in your fist so that he can just smell it but not see it.

When looking for treats, ensure that it’s something your pet will find truly rewarding. But make sure not to use foods like chocolate, ice cream, chips and other table scraps for they can lead to health problems. Furthermore, treats are not staple foods. You still need to continue giving high quality dog foods every mealtime.

Similar to dog ownership, beagle puppy training is a long-time commitment. It doesn’t end after a month or two of lessons on obedience, housebreaking and others. They need to know a lot of things in order for them not to cause problems to their human family. One lesson is teaching them to stay away from the trash no matter how tempting the smell is.

Beagle is an intelligent breed of canine developed to have the best sense of smell. This attribute, though essential in hunting, can possibly give you problems if he decided to use his skill not on scenting a hare but on the smelly contents of your garbage can. Scavenging is evidently not acceptable for various reasons:

  • Trash cans hold all sorts of waste - expired or rotten food, pesticide, poison or chemical containers, shattered pieces of household items and just about everything you do not need anymore. These items might cause choking or stomach upset if ingested.
  • The dog may knock down the trash can therefore leaving a clutter in the area. Cleaning the mess he created in the kitchen or your neighbor’s property isn’t an easy task, right?
  • Disobeying your order to stay away from the trashcan is not a good behavior. Soon enough, he will learn to growl and worse, bite you if you attempt to interrupt him from what he’s doing.

As a solution to this predicament, teach your pet the “leave it” or “off”. These commands will help you control your dog in different situations thus explains why dog gurus always emphasize that dog training should always include lessons on commands like these.

Others use household cleaners such as ammonia and bleach to stop them from messing your garbage. Pouring bleach or sprinkling ammonia into your trashcan can make him stay far away from the smell.

If all else fail, buy a trashcan with lid and lock or block off the spot where your trashcan is positioned.

If there is one thing that needs to be done right after your pup arrived home, that would be beagle puppy training. Training doesn’t necessarily mean teaching him complex or advance tricks immediately. During your pup’s first few days at home, training sessions should be usually about helping him become accustomed to the new atmosphere he is into.

Knowing more about the breed and puppies on the whole will help you better understand the complexities of dog training. Here are a few puppy facts you’ll want to know:

  • Beagles, having been bred for hunting, have keen sense of smell and tracking instinct. Thus it wouldn’t be a surprise if you will see your five-month old beagle puppy chasing after birds, squirrels or other smaller creatures he run into. He might even chase cars and other passersby if he feels like doing so. It is therefore essential that you train your puppy to get rid of the behavior upon noticing the first few signs of it.
  • Since they’ve got keen sense of smell, it is not uncommon for a beagle to poke through your trash and look for something that can catch his attention. But obviously, the garbage can isn’t the right spot for your pet, right? No matter how fancy or expensive your garbage can is, it is still a garbage can. It may contain material that can potentially cause choking, stomach upset and poisoning. Use garbage can with top cover and lock or better yet, don’t allow him access to the area where your garbage is placed.
  • The normal lifespan of a beagle is around 12 to 15 years. Nevertheless, some dogs, especially those who were bred irresponsibly, may develop various health problems like hypothyroidism, epilepsy, hip dysplasia and a range of eye disorders. To avoid these problems, make sure to bring home only good quality pups. On the contrary, if you are adopting from a rescue, it helps to frequently examine and observe his health condition. Watch out for early signs and seek out your vet’s advice if you suspect that something is going on with him.

This article may have failed to discuss what specific method is effective, but knowing these facts will surely help you find out the suitable dog training approach for your beagle.

Beagle Training For Beagles With Excess Weight

If there are several things a fat beagle needs, that would be diet plan adjustments, exercise routine and beagle training. But just before we discuss the solutions to this weight gain problem, let’s tackle first the issue why many dogs are overweight. As everyone knows, dogs nowadays exist as pets. In addition to providing them their basic needs, a lot of owners are also keen on pampering their beloved pooch with expensive stuff like designer collar, deluxe bed and more. Many of them are pampered the way parents pamper their kids. Put simply, their role have started to evolve from working animals in the wild to preferred household pets which also means member of the family.

But even if the way they live has improved, unfortunately that change have become one of the reasons of various health concerns. Rather than natural healthy diet, many owners feed their pets with kibbles and canned foods without knowing if that particular dog food is of high quality. Apart from that, it can be so hard to resist those lovely eyes pleading for food each time he sees you eating something he is not supposed to eat like chocolate and other foods safe for human consumption but harmful for dogs.

An overweight pet calls for a change in diet and lifestyle. When switching foods, remember to do so gradually so as not to cause stomach upset. High quality food rich in protein should be introduced in small amount at a time then slowly increase the amount over time.

Regular exercise is as essential as high quality food. Your beagle must be taken out for walks at least once a day and must be provided with dog training sessions on regular basis. Train your dog basic obedience and if he has mastered the basic, go for other elaborate tricks like rollover, play dead and others. With this, your dog will keep on moving hence give him additional exercise. Furthermore, training will also keep him mentally too busy to think about food.

To make daily walks stress-free, it is best that your pet is taught how to walk correctly at the same time trained in using collar and leash while young. To sum it all up, developing good habit starts at an early age so better start training your puppy before it’s too late.

We present below some dog behavior issues that all dog owners are bound to encounter. As you help your dog to learn that it can do better, it is inevitable that you yourself learn a thing or two. Have fun learning with your dog through beagle training!

Chewing

Never give a puppy a shoe to chew on; the worse that you could end up teaching the dog is all shows are meant for chewing, and there is no such thing as expensive shoes or cheap shoes. If you will have a puppy at home, expect that it will chew, since it will be teething. Chew toys will need to be available, and the puppy will keep up the nibbling until the puppy reaches one year of age.

Using Beagle training, if you see your dog chewing something it is not allowed to try out, say “give” and take it from the dog gently but firmly. Once the dog relinquishes the “bad” toy, be ready to give the “good” toy, and be quick to praise it with a hearty “good boy” the moment it has the right toy in its mouth. But if the dog resists giving up the bad toy, put your hand behind the dog’s head, and use your thumb and forefinger to gently apply some pressure on the back of the jaw where the upper and lower teeth meet. Eventually the dog will give up the toy. Again, pronounce the “give” command clearly, and compliment and praise the dog if it takes the intended chew toy.

Running Away

Puppies love playing chase, but for them it is even more fun if they are the ones being chased, preferably by their human. So there’s no practical time than puppyhood to teach a dog that if it runs, you do not chase. In case the puppy runs on ahead and refuses to come back, turn and walk a few paces away, then squat or sit down, ignoring the puppy. Soon the puppy will be back, asking for play and attention. If the puppy touches you, respond by patting the dog, cuddling or scratching it. As the puppy matures, teach it the “come” command by showing it a treat, then telling it to “Come!”

Biting

The sight of puppies chasing, biting and nipping each other is no cause for much concern, but it is otherwise if a puppy turns to nipping you!

In case of a biting puppy, the Beagle training solution is to imitate a puppy playmate’s reaction. If your puppy bites you (even if not painful), give the yip-noise that a hurt puppy would also give. Then turn away to ignore the puppy. If the puppy plays with good manners, always praise it.

In the case of a puppy that runs after you while nipping, do not avoid it. Instead, stop (a target that stops is not fun anymore for the puppy), say “No” to it, then ignore it. Other things you could do to dissuade puppy-biting is to encourage your puppy to occasionally take food from your mouth, starting from the moment it enters your home.

A caveat to the “yipping-noise” method: this works only if the puppy has been left long enough with its littermates to learn this lesson; a trusted and responsible breeder will, for example, refuse selling or separating puppies before 8 weeks of age.

Digging

There are specific and real reasons why a dog wants to burrow into your property. Some common reasons are to make a bed of cool earth to lie on, to chase a noisy bug (even a simple mole-cricket is enough reason to dig), to hide a toy, or to work away boredom. Also, some dogs dig near the fence in order to get out and roam, which is part of their instinct.

Some breeds like terriers cannot resist the urge to dig. This emphasizes the importance of considering first what instincts are dominant for a certain breed, before seriously selecting which to own.

To end, remember that a dog will learn much from the tone of your voice. Common sense, and also a healthy amount of praise, are good ways of communicating with a dog, but it is important to also get across to an older puppy what “No” means. A firm and severe “No” combined with a quick squirt of water will help a stubborn dog get in line. What’s more, it is painless to you and your dog.

Beagle Training and the Famous Beagle Howl

As common to all hound dogs, beagles were bred to to give voice when they are out hunting. These vocalizations from dogs with beagle training were and are effective guides for informing the hunter across the distances of the dogs’ position, whether it is going after a prey, and whether the prey has been caught.

Beagles vocalize in three ways, and all vocalizations can be carried over long distances by dogs with Beagle training, helping steer the hunter towards the dogs in spite of thick vegetation which obstructs the view and slows down movement. Their generic barks give evidence that they were meant to have robust, loud voices. The howls, meant to signal the cornering or catching of the quarry; Beagle fans find it awesome to watch the dog throw its head back, noise pointing straight up, and letting a rambling, eerie “song.” Last comes the notorious (depends on your point of view) bay, said to be among the least in musical quality. The bay is an unpleasant half-bark and half-howl, and a beagle, whose fancy is always caught by something interesting every moment, will make frequent use of it.

The beagle’s baying and howling grows into a Beagle training issue when the dog uses these vocalizations whenever it is left alone (and it will indeed use these). Beagles do best with human companionship and deteriorate if deprived of play for stretches of time in a day. Howling is simply one of their ways to break the monotony. It will prove to be a major challenge how to train a beagle not to howl given that such an action is part of their history; if you know that you are going to be out of the house most of the time with the dog left inside, honestly and frankly weight the factors before you get this breed. If there is simply no way for you to reject owning a beagle, then you may want to give the help of a dog sitter a try, or you can bring the dog to a day care center.

If you think something needs to be done about the dog’s howling and barking, you may want to get a fence that does not allow to the dog to see out into the streets and the neighborhood. This way, no outside stimulation is likely to catch its attention.

The next time you are around and the dog starts barking, you may want to try stopping it by spraying it with some water out of a spray bottle. When the dog barks, spray it with water, and tell it “No bark.” Soon, you may only need to aim the bottle at it and say the command to make it quiet, and later on, only the command.
