THIS IS AWESOME! My favorite dog trainer and dog whisperer of all time has just released a free video online explaining how to eliminate 94% of all unwanted behavior in ANY dog. Her name is Krista Cantrell and I absolutely LOVE the way she teaches. Click on the video to watch. You'll be glad you did...

Humans have grown so attached to dogs because these animals have proven their worth not only as affectionate pets but also as dependable protectors and helpers. Humans have grown to love dogs because these animals that are considered as members of the family have become invaluable helpers and companions. Dogs are highly valued for their affectionate and loyal nature thus the love and care these animals receive from the family is the same as the love and care given to babies.

Dogs are truly viewed as family members as not only are they kissed and cuddled, they are also allowed to sleep with the masters. Because of the close attachment to the pet, owners would worry if something out of the ordinary is noticed in the pet. Pet parents would worry about the well being of the pet so that a pet noticed to be under the weather will be rushed to the vet.

Being considered as the baby of the family, it would not be surprising to see the family constantly observing the pet so that any unusual movement will be noticed. For instance the twitching of the sleeping dog would be a cause for concern as it can be misconstrued by the owner as a seizure. Sleeping dogs are known to twitch every few seconds and as most dog owners are aware of canine seizures, the twitching of the pet would cause the owner to worry.

Seizure and twitching are both involuntary movements. Seizure can be differentiated from switching because the involuntary movements during a seizure are stiffer. Moreover, because a seizing dog would not be responsive to the voice of the owner, waking up the pet would be impossible. A twitching sleeping dog would respond to the voice of the master thus it can be roused easily. The owner can simply tap the dog or call the dog’s name. A seizing dog, especially one that is suffering from cluster seizing episodes would need medical attention.

Humans would dream when they are sleeping deeply. This is true with dogs too. A dreaming dog may pedal the legs as if running, snap the mouth at imaginary butterflies or twitch. The dog may also twitch because similar to humans, dogs may be dreaming of falling from heights and the twitching is the effort made to abort the fall. Twitching is normal in sleeping dogs but there are instances when a dog owner has to give attention to the twitching of the pet as it can be a symptom of a medical concern. Constant twitching can be a sign of canine distemper. Canine distemper on its advance stage will affect the neurological system of the dog resulting to these involuntary movements.

At Sarah’s Dogs you can find out more about why dogs twitch in their sleep as well as first aid for dogs.
