Eating paper is one of the less acceptable habits of our canine friends. Why do dogs love eating paper? Dogs are known for their great appetites as well as for their very sensitive scenting abilities. Because of these qualities, papers with traces of food will be very interesting to a dog.
A dog will certainly not pass up the chance to eat a hamburger wrapper or a pizza box because it would have the mouth watering aroma of food. Would a book, a toilet paper or a newspaper still be interesting to the dog? OMG! Dogs really do have the propensity to develop weird behaviors. It seems that dogs find the sounds of tearing paper very interesting. A pet owner that has burned the midnight oil to prepare for a presentation will be dismayed to see that the working papers became the breakfast of the pet.
What do you think would a dog that is left alone all day do? Bored dogs will find something to while the time and because dogs would not know right from wrong, the boredom will result to destroyed belongings. The telephone book, a newspaper lying on the table or even the toilet paper in the bathroom would catch the dog’s attention. Apart from having a playful and curious personalities, dogs do have the inclination to chew so that the texture of the paper as well as the tearing sound will be very interesting to a bored dog. Puppies have the inclination to chew and papers are one of the things that end up in the dog’s mouths. Aside from a curious nature puppies will be enticed to eat paper especially if chewing soothes sore gums.
The paper eating habit of the dog can be a symptom of a medical problem. The dog’s inclination to eat paper is commonly blamed on the behavioral problems. But some dogs that have the propensity to eat papers are known to suffer either from anemia or from a gastro intestinal disorder. Malabsorptive and maldigestive disorders prevent the body from absorbing the nutrients found in the intestinal tracts.
Eating paper similar to the ingestion of other non-food items will be dangerous for the health of the dog. Hopefully the papers that have entered through the dog’s mouth would have exited through the other end. If this does not happen, the dog will be in for some serious medical concern and the pet owner would also have to face hefty medical bills if the dog has to have surgery.
