Dogs have huge appetites and pet owners make sure that their pets are provided with enough good quality food. To ensure that the dog has a healthy diet, they would feed the dog nutritious home cooked meals. An owner though would get exasperated with the pet’s bizarre habits. You make sure that the dogs has enough food on its dish but whenever given a chance, a dog would eat non-edible things. As if it is not enough for dogs to eat spoiled food human’s best friends would eat grasses and leaves, their own and other dog’s feces Do you know that dogs have an unexplainable fondness for mud too?
All dogs have the propensity to dig. Dogs have ultra sensitive sense of smell. Apart from having a high level of intelligence dogs are noted to have retentive memories too. Even after a while, a dog can unerringly find the place where it has buried a bone. Eating mud is associated with the dog’s habit of digging and eating whatever bones and other treasures they have dug. Puppies are curious of their environment and in the process of investigating their world, puppies would use their mouth. These digging habit is believed to be the reason why dogs have developed a fondness for mud. Your dogs fondness for mud can be due to other reasons.
Eating mud is believed to be the home remedy of canines for stomach upset and for parasite infestation. Stomach upset is common in dogs given their propensity to be indiscriminate eaters. Worm infestation is also a common concern of dogs because of their habit to eat feces. Eating mud is as well attributed to the dog’s effort to fill up a nutritional deficiency that is caused when dog owners feed the pet with low quality commercial food that contains more cereal fillers.
Mud eating can be due to a medical concern. A dog with maldigestive or malabsorptive disorders would not benefit from the nutrients of the eaten food. This means that the body will still be nutrient deficient in spite of the nutritious foods provided by the owner. To fill up the nutrient deficiency in the diet, the dog would eat mud.
Dogs would always want to have the attention of the family because these are social animals. If attention is not given the dog will try to get the attention of the family. Your dog’s inclination to eat mud may be your wake up call to give more attention to the pet.
