What To Do When Your Dog Is In Labor
THIS IS AWESOME!
My favorite dog trainer and dog whisperer of all time has just released a free video online explaining how to eliminate 94% of all unwanted behavior in ANY dog.
Her name is Krista Cantrell and I absolutely LOVE the way she teaches.

The thought of holding adorable puppies would certainly be exciting more so if the puppies would come out from the beloved pooch. Family members will excitedly wait for the D-day. Pregnancy is a normal episode in a dog’s life and dogs will be their usual active and spirited self even when the time to give birth comes. Dogs in the wild have existed and reproduced even without human intervention and even after domestication, dogs would deliver their pups normally and without any snags.
However, this does not mean that birthing would be totally free of complications. Birthing complications such as the inability of the dam to expel the puppies will endanger the life of the puppies and the mother dog. The life of the dog can be lost due to birthing complications.
Dogs, similar to humans would experience labor pains and owners can do nothing to help the pet but to make sure that the soon-to be mama is comfortable. Dogs have different personalities so that while some would appreciate the soothing and comforting presence of the owner, others would prefer to be alone and would show aggression because of the labor pains. An owner can comfort the pet while she is going through the labor pains but the dog must be allowed to do her thing when it is time to give birth. Your participation in the birthing process is to make sure that the newborn puppies are not crushed by the dam straining to expel another pup.
After the pup is expelled, the mama dog will do the cleaning of the new born pup from tearing the sack to biting off the umbilical cord. By licking the puppy, the mother dog cleans the pup and at the same time stimulates breathing. Once the pup is cleaned by the dam, it can be placed in a prepared litter box so that it won’t be crushed by the mother dog.
The dog does all the work of delivering and cleaning the puppies but complications that would need human assistance can occur. A dam can get too exhausted if the pup that is being expelled feet first is stuck in the birth canal. In cases such as this, the dog have to have human assistance. Holding the exposed part of the puppy with a towel, gently pull in a downward direction gently until it is expelled. Since the dam is already too exhausted, cleaning the pup will be your task. Tear the sac immediately to prevent the pup from suffocating. Clean the fluid from the nose and mouth and rub the pup briskly to stimulate breathing. After the dam has expelled all the pups, replace the soiled sheets and take the puppies to the dam to nurse.
