Training A New Dog : A Short Guide To The Basic Commands
THIS IS AWESOME!
My favorite dog trainer and dog whisperer of all time has just released a free video online explaining how to eliminate 94% of all unwanted behavior in ANY dog.
Her name is Krista Cantrell and I absolutely LOVE the way she teaches.

When you get a new dog, there are certain commands you need to teach him so he knows how to behave. Read our guide to find out more. One important command to teach your dog is ‘come’. You should work on this for a few minutes a couple of times a day. When telling him to come, keep your voice excited and tap your knees to encourage him over. If he doesn’t come, keep positive and try it again. Always praise him when he does what you ask.
In order to keep your dog safe, you should also teach him the command ‘drop it’. Be patient while your dog learns this, although he should pick it up within a few minutes. Give him a toy to bite, then offer him a treat and say ‘drop it’. Hopefully he’ll drop the toy in favor of the treat, at which point you should praise him. Do it a few more times, moving the treat further away until he drops the toy automatically and you don’t need the treat.
Your dog might sometimes pick up things that are harmful, so you should teach him to ‘leave it’. Do this using treats – once your dog is interested in the treat, cover it up before telling him to ‘leave it’ and don’t hand it over no matter how much he wants it, or else it’ll make it harder for him to learn the command. Once he gives up on the treat, you can give him a different treat to the one covered up. 5 minute sessions work well here.
You also need to teach the dog to ‘lie down’ early on. Do this by offering a treat, then say ‘down’. Lower the treat to the ground and he should follow you. Give him the treat and praise him as soon as he’s lying down. If he doesn’t get it at first, be patient and try again later. Don’t ever physically push him down if he won’t follow the treat. Hopefully 10 minutes training twice a day will help him master the command.
Finally, after teaching ‘lie down’, you should teach the dog to go to his place. Pick a place for the dog and put a bed or rug down for him there. Choose a word like ‘place’ or ‘bed’ to use as a command, then start by bribing him with treats to go to the bed. Hopefully it should only take a few tries. Then you should work on getting him to lie down at the same time and only give him the treat when he’s lying down in bed.
