A good number of dog owners are now switching their pets to a grain free dog food diet. This popular trend has caught on recently especially now that some pet nutritionist have been attesting to the negative effects of a grain filled diet.
When you switch your animal to a grain free formula you should consider the expenditure of this switch, this is because grain free formulas usually are a bit more expensive than the normal dog food. This is a factor you should look into while making this switch.
Considering the cost of the meal you will discover that you still do not spend a lot by switching its diet, this is because dogs consume a lot less of this formula in order to feel satisfied. The normal dog formula usually has a lot of grain additives known as fillers so as to add the volume of the dog meal, your pet will have to eat a lot more of this stuff to feel satisfied.
Another thing to take into account while making the switch is the difference between dry formula foods or canned formula foods. The dried food is usually added a carbohydrate based ingredient so as to make it maintain its dry food shape, the canned food has moisture in it, this helps give your dog the moisture content it requires daily.
Another important factor to consider is the fat content of the dog meal formula, this is important because if your pet is overweight, it will be best if you feed the dog a formula that has a lower protein ratio. Usually when the protein ratio of the dog food goes up, the calories go up too.
One other important factor to take into account is the age of your pet, if your pet has reached the age of around 5 years it may be best to switch its diet to the grain free formula, this is because dogs that are advanced in age usually have difficulty digesting the grain filled dog formula, some may even develop allergic reactions caused by the regular diet.
When changing your dogs diet you should do it in a step by step manner, reason being that dogs have bacteria in their stomachs that attack foreign objects, this may cause your pet to suffer diarrhea and stomach upsets.
When switching meal, you need to switch slowly, the first week give the dog three quarters of its old dish and a quarter of its new formula, in the second week, give the dog half and half of the old and new meal, in the third week, give the dog three quarters of the new dish and a quarter of the old, you will finally complete the transition on the fourth week.
Dog owners who have switched their dogs diet to a grain free diet have reported very good results, it is even claimed that allergies, skin problems and impacted anal glands have improved due to the switch to this diet. This is clearly a worthwhile try for the sake of your pet.
