A dog’s tail is a very necessary appendage as it is used by man’s best friends to communicate, used for comfort and even in the trivial function of swatting flies and other insect that pesters the dog. A dog’s tail whether feathered or smooth coated will add to the outstanding appearance of the dog. An owner of a stumpy tailed dog cant’ help but wonder how the pet can manage?
Centuries ago, it was a custom in Great Britain to dock the tails of dogs. By docking the tail of the dog, a farmer or a drover is exempted from paying taxes imposed on keeping the animal. Dog owners continued to dock the tails of their pets in spite of the fact that the custom was abandoned in 1796. Docking is done to conform with the breed standard. Some dogs have naturally short tails. Such is the case of the Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog.
The Australian Stumpy Tailed Cattle Dog was developed through careful breeding. There are other herding dogs in Australia but this short tailed breed is believed to be the oldest. This cattle dog is believed to have resulted from the mating of a Dingo with a bobtailed dog. The Australian Stumpy Tailed Dog resulted from a breeding program that eliminates long tailed dogs and use only stumpy tailed dogs as breeding stock.
These dogs are highly valued by ranchers and drovers because they are excellent and dependable herders. The dog is tireless, very alert and wary of strangers. Apart from being hardworking, these dogs also possess shrewdness and intelligence that are most important assets in herding. These abilities are very important especially when the dog has to control mobs of cattle. An Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog was originally utilized to herd. This dog would tirelessly keep livestock in line even under the scorching heat of the sun.
These dogs would rather be out in the pasture with the cattle but some specimens have adapted to being home companions. These are very independent dogs thus unlike other dog breeds, they would not really appreciate being cuddled and hugged. These dogs though would appreciate good words from the owners. The owner of this breed have to be aware that inactivity will make the dogs destructive. These dogs need lots of activities and big space to run and to play. The owner of this breed has to have the ability to handle the dog otherwise it will be a hard to manage pet that has the tendency to herd the family.
