If you’ve ever had a problem with dog barking, you know it can be a problem for the whole neighborhood, not just to your household. If you want to stop barking dogs today, you will need to learn about the different methods that exist out there for this problem so that you can learn to fix it with your dog(s).
There are devices such as dog barking collars, methods such as dog behavior counseling and even at-home training techniques you can do with your dog. But before you do anything, you need to gain an understanding of why your dog is barking in the first place.
In fact, this is a great first step to treating any dog behavior problem. Dogs don’t bark to be spiteful or to make your life miserable nor do they do it to get back at you for something. It can be compared to why babies cry. Even though you don’t understand his language, your dog is trying to talk to you when he’s barking.
There are some breeds who bark more than others but in general, if your dog is barking, there is a reason for it. If your dog seems to be barking a lot, your first step should be to try to figure out if there is a logical reason why.
What do you observe when your dog is barking? Are there certain times when your dog barks?
Some reasons for dog barking include:
· Worried or nervous dog
· Barking for protection
· Physical pain or discomfort
· Medical condition causing discomfort
· Too hot or too cold
· Hungry or thirsty
· Not getting enough attention
· Not getting enough exercise
· Bored or lonely
If your dog is barking when kept in the backyard at night, consider possible reasons above that could be causing the barking. Is there a squirrel or cat running through the yard teasing your dog or making him feel threatened? Maybe there is another dog in the neighborhood coming around.
How much time is your dog spending in the back yard? Maybe he’s getting bored or has run out of food or water. Maybe he wants a change of scenery or some human interaction for a while. You have to consider any of these reasons that could be contributing to the barking.
Is your dog inside the house when he’s barking? Could you be leaving him inside too long? Does he need to go out to the bathroom or go walking? All dogs need sufficient amounts of time to spend outside jumping around and playing. They also have no other way to tell you when there is a problem other than to bark or whine so it’s your job as the owner to keep an eye on your dog and try to figure out the problem.
Now that you know more about the why, you are prepared to stop barking dogs today. If you can’t see a reason for your dog’s barking, you should take him to a veterinarian for an examination to rule out any physical causes or medical conditions that might be causing the problem. If the steps you try at home don’t work out, then consider scheduling a visit with a dog behavior therapist. Your dog will thank you and so will your neighbors!
