If the best things come in small packages, a smaller dog could make a great addition to your family. These very small innocent creatures can quickly win you over with their unconditional love, regular companionship and signature diminutive demeanor. The truth is, small dogs can make ideal companion dogs because they can continually be by your side, carried around easily, quickly scooped up into your lap, or tucked into your carry bag. Paris Hilton’s Chihuahua playing peek-a-boo out of her Lady Dior bag is actually a popular and much publicized case in point.

Commonly, dogs that weigh less than 22 pounds or are usually shorter than 16 inches are bracketed as small dogs. Obviously, this is merely a rough estimate, and some small dog breeds are slightly heavier or much lighter and even taller or even tinier than this. Consider as an illustration the Chihuahua breed. They are the tiniest of all smaller dogs weighing a meager 6 to 8 pounds and standing proud at a modest 6 to 10 inches tall.

There are a stupendous number of small dog breeds that will capture your heart. Aside from the itsy-bitsy Chihuahua, you will find the adorable Pug, the silky Maltese, the Beagle with its improved sense of smell, the eager to please Boston Terrier, the frisky and impish Pomeranian, the energetic Yorkshire Terrier, the lion-faced Pekingese, the long-haired fluffy Lhasa Apso, and a lot more. Each of them is just as adorable as the other, and you will be spoiled for choice as far as this little league goes.

Small dogs are really invaluable additions to the family. Apart from simply being great companions and adapting quickly to your home environment, they also make remarkable watch dogs. And that means you don’t have to feel concerned regarding your family’s safety with a little dog at your house. They might be very small, however the slightest inkling of danger should have them bringing the house down with their deep-throated yelps and barks.

Little dogs can also be trained quite easily. They are obedient dogs and have an eagerness to please their owners. For this reason, following orders and paying attention to your command comes quite easy to them.

In most cases, small dog breeds are especially low maintenance. Most of them do not shed fur all over the place, and consequently your home will not be a furry mess. Also, such dogs get their fill of physical exercise simply by strutting about indoors. So in the event that you’re pressed for time and aren’t in a position to continuously take your dog out to get a walk, you don’t have to feel concerned about him getting lazy or fat.

Lastly, and most importantly, smaller dogs usually are a great hit with small children. Their unintimidating dimensions and unbridled devotion will make it much easier for small kids to make friends with these small creatures. On the whole, small dogs are not only the cutest and most adorable of dog breeds, but additionally very valuable and beneficial additions to the family. There is nothing quite like a cute little doggie to complete that perfect family portrait.
