There are three different methods currently in use as no bark collars for dogs. All of them work, but there is some debate as to whether these collars are ethical to use. As a dog owner, you should know about the no bark dog collar you want to use on your noisy pet.

Citronella Spray Collars

This type of no bark collars pulverize citrus substance under the dog’s chin if it barks for too long. Because dogs really don’t like the smell of citrus, this can be very effective as a no bark collar. Some types of citrus spray collars make a hissing sound before spraying the substance, so that the dog can stop barking even sooner once it learns what the hiss means. The citrus spray collars do not hurt the dog, they merely annoy it.

Ultrasonic/Sonic Dog Collars

Ultrasonic or sonic dog collars will emit a high pitched tone if the dog barks. This tone is similar to the dog whistle sound. Usually people do not hear it, but dogs get easily annoyed by the noise and tend to stop barking once they learn this is how they can silence the device. Is this considered ethical by the experts? Yes. Once again, there is no pain involved – it’s just a bit annoying for the dog. Sonic collars are not as efficient as the other bark collars because the dog can easily get used to the sound and ignore it.

Electronic No Bark Collars

When the electronic collar “hears” the dog bark, it gives the dog a mild electrical shock. The shock is not harmful and it can be compared to static shock humans feel. Some people condemn the use of this type of collar, considering it unethical. Because the dog can actually feel discomfort due to the shock, some consider it should not be used anymore. There are persons who do not approve with these devices. However, the electronic dog collar does a great job in calming down your dog so, if you are a dog owner and your dog never ceases to bark, you may as well consider buying a bark collar.

To deter a dog from barking excessively, you can choose from no bark collars that use citronella spray, sonic or ultrasonic sounds, or electronic shocking. Citronella spray and sonic or ultrasonic sounds are considered ethical, but electronic shock collars are sometimes considered unethical because of the shocking. Anyway, you can safely pick any of the three alternatives, as none is considered a real threat to your dog.
