Owners dream of having well trained dogs who will dutifully follow directions and understand orders. In contrast, Jack Russell puppies rarely demonstrate good behavior as they are so energetic and exuberant. Because of their energetic nature, Jack Russell puppies need to begin training as early as possible in order to become competent and obedient companions.

Don’t worry; training your puppy is actually fairly simple. Jack Russells are intelligent animals and can learn quite a bit, especially when you begin training them as puppies. The only difficulty could be deciding when, and how, to start.

Traditional advice tells you to start young. Do this as early as possible, when your puppy first arrives, as you don’t want any bad habits to develop and become irreversible. Make sure you’re totally on the ball and never tolerate any rough play fighting or aggressive behaviour of any kind, and make sure your new puppy knows who’s in charge You are the master.

Early socialisation is particularly important to get him used to other animals, pets and people, so this should form a vital part of your Jack Russell puppy training routine. A great way to do this is to take obedience classes as your dog can receive training and socialization at the same time.

Regularity And Reward

It’s absolutely necessary that you stay as consistent as possible when training your Jack Russell puppy. If you laugh at his play biting one minute and reprimand him the next he’s never going to know which one’s acceptable, so don’t confuse him with inconsistent commands. Settle on what type of behavior is suitable for your living space and be firm and consistent with the rules so that there are no exceptions to confuse your dog.

Positive reinforcement is another important part of the process. Heap praise upon your pet anytime he does as he’s told and pay no attention to his reckless behavior and soon he will learn that only good behavior will be recognized and rewarded. Even punishment is seen as attention, so only ever give him that attention when he deserves it (unless of course it’s severe misbehaving, in which case a firm “no” should do it.

These practices can be used when it comes to things like toilet training as well. Praise him when he goes to the toilet outside but don’t reprimand him if he makes a puddle indoors (unless you catch him in the act, in which case take him outside immediately to show where he’s supposed to go), and if you show him what’s right he’ll soon get the hang of things.

Be Patient Throughout Jack Russell Puppy Training

As smart as Jack Russells are, training is a process that takes some time. The process can be made quicker by consistency, routine and reinforcement, but accept the fact that, like all animals, they won’t instantly change their behaviour. Accept that this process will take awhile to sink in, especially because Jacks have such short attention spans that you’ll have to stick to brief, frequent sessions with lots of praise and support.

Provided you’re up to the task, puppy training can work wonders on your Jack Russell. Keep a consistent standard for them to follow, be active in their learning process, and you’ll see the training start to work. In the end you’ll have a companion that knows commands and can be as obedient as he is adorable. How does that sound?
