A ringworm dog or a dog with ringworm are not the only pet that can get ringworm. Humans, cats, and animals can too. Ringworm is a fungus infection belonging to the “dermatophyte” family that affects the skin, hair or nails. Ringworm is not caused by a worm or insect. The ringworm can appear as a raised ring shaped rash on the skin area. Other symptoms associated with ringworm is swelling, redness, itching and round patches of hair loss. To find out what is happening with your dog, its best to seek the feedback from your vets diagnosis. Just viewing the skin area is not sufficient enough to do the proper analysis. The vet may utilize a black light or also called a wood’s lamp. Normally about fifty percent of M.Canis will glow under the lamp. Your vet may want to take a skin or hair sample and examine the sample under a microscope. Scrapings of the lesion may be required so that a culture can be developed over time. Ringworm dogs tend to be highly contagious by the by.

Ringworm can be spread by various direct contact with an infected person, surface, pet or animal. Your dog might of contracted the infection from digging into infected fungus soil not to mention another infected dog, cat or human. Puppies who get ringworm can easily spread the infection to adult dogs and litter playmates. The ringworm fungus can take residence in the hair cells or skin area. The ringworm fungus does live off the keratin found in the dogs dead hair and skin which usually spreads outward from the source of the infection. Dogs with weak immune systems are an ideal candidate for ringworm or dogs with skin wounds as well.

Skin allergies, skin parasites and yeast infections have similar looking appearances to that of ringworm. The ringworm treatment procedures are normally easy and quick once the vets diagnosis has be completed. The vet may prescribe an oral medication to be used or even a medicated ointment or cream. As a reminder to follow the medicated directions with the proper time schedules. Your vet may recommend a medicated shampoo for the fungus spores in the dogs fur.

If ringworm has be confirmed, it is recommended to remove the spores from the dogs collars, bedding and toys etc. using detergent and a color safe bleach. Since ringworm is present in your home, vacuuming the carpet will probably be required. Steam cleaning may be necessary  in severe cases at the start and end of your ringworm treatment process.

Going to see your veterinarian and get professional pointers will lead to a quick and happy recovery of your ringworm circumstances.
