THIS IS AWESOME! My favorite dog trainer and dog whisperer of all time has just released a free video online explaining how to eliminate 94% of all unwanted behavior in ANY dog. Her name is Krista Cantrell and I absolutely LOVE the way she teaches. Click on the video to watch. You'll be glad you did...

Puppies are so cute; everybody loves them.  They are curious, fun, playful and cuddley and we tend to enjoy every part of having a new puppy until they do their duty in an inappropriate spot and then we have to contend with the biggest problem and difficulty of having a new puppy, house training.

The most important thing to remind yourself of and to take into consideration is that your puppy is still very young.  He does not yet have the comprehension level to control his potty habits or to realize what you are asking him to do when you tell him to go potty.  You will need to have patience and work with him closely for a couple of weeks before he develops the ability to alert you when it is time to go out and to control his bladder and other functions.

At the start you may need to take your puppy outside as often as 2 to 3 times per hour.  That may seem like a lot but a little puppy does not yet comprehend how to control himself and the active playing that most puppies engage in creates urine.  Nighttime may be better as a resting puppy will not need to go out as often.  Do not wake a sleeping puppy just to go out to potty but rather just make sure and take him out as soon as you can after he awakens.

Consistency is the most important part of potty training.  Be consistent in taking him out on his leash to the same potty place every time.  Be consistent about issuing the same commands such as “potty now” every time.  And be consistent with your lavish praise and special treats when he does finally go.

If you make the entire experience a positive one for your puppy your puppy house training will be completed sooner.  That means that you will need to be patient and loving even when there is a mishap.  Just take him outside and praise him when he does it correctly and ignore it when he does it wrong.  Your dog wants to make you happy so it is crucial that you do not do anything that will confuse him.

It is unlikely that you will be able to spend all of your time with your puppy so when you need to be away from your puppy you should put him in a crate.  Puppies and dogs are natural den animals and they like to have a small place of their own.  Also, puppies will rarely dirty their own place so a crate will assist you in teaching your puppy how to control himself.

Consistency is the most crucial aspect of training.  Make sure that you use a consistent command and take him to the same place every time so that there is no confusion on his part.  Making the experience a positive one for him will also help him to learn faster and you will be done with your potty training sooner.

It should take just a few short weeks to complete your house training.  Doing it right will serve you for the entire time that you own your dog so be consistent and positive and you will be able to enjoy many happy years with your new puppy.
