Bred for the hunt, the Jack Russell is still an exuberant creature who loves to chase, bark, run, dig, and even sometimes gets so carried away with his own energy that he becomes aggressive. Suffice it to say that the Jack Russell does not come by obedience naturally, but this isn’t to say he can’t be taught.

Obedience Issues You Might Contend With

Consider some of the common Jack Russell obedience issues that many owners have to contend with. Typical obedience problems may include:

Aggression Directed At Other Dogs

Jacks can sometimes have an impulsive attitude that makes them quick to initiate a confrontation with any rival dogs.

Will Leap And May Snap

These dogs are very excitable and love being with people, but their excitement can sometimes lead to playful snapping when they’re over-stimulated

Love To Chase

Because of its hunting heritage, this breed will often chase anything that’s smaller making it unlikely to get along with cats or other small animals

How Training Can Help

Jack Russells are feisty by nature, so to have a dog that’s perfectly manageable and obedient, training is essential. Assert Your Dominance

Dogs are pack animals and they look to someone to be their leader. That needs to be you. The only way you can hope to succeed with Jack Russell obedience training is if you show them who’s boss straight away, as you need them to respect you if they’re ever going to learn. Assert yourself by leading the way through doors, eating before he does, and by being consistent with your control so that your dog knows his place within the pack, which is under you.

Get Them Mixing With Others

Early socialization is one of the most important steps in this training. Aggression toward other dogs will subside if your puppy grows comfortable around other dogs starting at an early age. Obedience classes can also be helpful in this respect, as your dog can train as he socializes with other puppies, allowing you to expedite your results.

Conclusion

Learning is a process for all creatures, so don’t expect instant results. It’s going to take time, effort and patience, and lot of love and praise when they get it right. But, no amount of training will be able to totally undo their nature and they could still get hot-headed around strange dogs if they perceive them as being a threat – the important thing is to train them correctly so you can keep them under control.
