Biting is a deeply rooted canine behavior. Dogs bite to communicate with other dogs and to manifest their dominance over other dogs lower in rank. By biting anything that they can put in their mouth puppies can discover their world. Puppies have the tendency to bite but their bites are commonly harmless as it is only their way of showing their affection and playfulness. However, if the biting behavior is not curtailed, the puppy will grow into a mature dog that has the tendency to bite and to show aggression. Preventing the development of the unwanted biting behavior of the pet is therefore very important job of a dog owner. Euthanasia is the tragic ending of vicious dogs that bite people. This tragic incident can be prevented by training the dog not to bite.
Dogs have a very effective way of teaching puppies about bite inhibition. A puppy that gets too rowdy and bites the mother dog or the litter mates will be punished. The threatening growl of the mother dog is a sign that it is not pleased with the way the pup has bitten its litter mate. If the message not to bite was ignored, the mother will pick the puppy and give it a violent shake.
This effective method of dogs in training puppies not to bite can be adapted by humans. A high pitched NO! and turning your back on the biting dog will make the pet understand that you don’t approve his behavior. Dogs are intelligent creatures and they will know that what they have done has displeased the master.
A mature dog that has taken to biting people will be a major concern. Play biting of puppies are generally harmless but a big older dog’s bite can result to severe injuries. In most cases, the dog’s biting is a manifestation of dominance. The dog’s tendency to bite can be modified with obedience training. You can train the dog or hire a qualified instructor that will substitute the pet’s vicious biting behavior with desirable behaviors. The obedience class will make the dog learn and obey commands as well as make the dog understand that its aggressive behavior towards people will never be acceptable.
Socialization is another way of stopping the dog’s tendency to bite. Aggression is usually a sign of the dog’s fearful personality. A defensive dog trying to protect its territory, its food and its life will bite. To do away with the feeling of fear, a dog has to be socialized so that it will be accustomed to facing different people and varied situations.
