THIS IS AWESOME! My favorite dog trainer and dog whisperer of all time has just released a free video online explaining how to eliminate 94% of all unwanted behavior in ANY dog. Her name is Krista Cantrell and I absolutely LOVE the way she teaches. Click on the video to watch. You'll be glad you did...

No one gets sick of playing with puppies. No one could fail to enjoy their helpless play and enthusiastic exploration. It is no surprise that few people are upset or afraid when a puppy jumps up on them. Sadly, however, this can be a dangerous habit to let these puppies get into. While they might be harmless now, when they are older they can be pests to adults and even dangerous to children if they continue jumping up. As such, you should be sure to stop this habit early on to prevent it developing into a nuisance later.

Puppies are extremely easy to train, and with a small bit of work you can easily teach them to stop jumping up. The traits that a puppy acquires when it is quite young through its daily life are likely to stick with it for the rest of its days. The only way to make sure that a puppy does not grow up into a dog that jumps up is to be strict with it from the start (though this does not mean cruel punishment).

Repetition is particularly important when dealing with dogs. The best way to make sure your puppy responds as you would like it to is to make sure you respond to it in the same way every time. A consistent and firm line (without upsetting the dog too much) is sure to get the desired response of stopping the puppy jumping up on you or on any guests you have. If you respond differently every time (e.g. sometimes angry, sometimes firm), the puppy will become confused and not know what to do - this is entirely undesirable.

The best dog trainers are the ones that can get inside the heads of their animals and see what they are thinking. This can help you address the issue in a way that will make you both happy and help you both develop a relationship of mutual trust and respect. What is it then, that causes a puppy to jump up? Puppies are highly excitable and are probably eager to see you - it can often be as simple as this.

For another thing, it is seeking attention. Such behaviour is not always positive, and can grow into much more negative acting out when the dog is older. The best way to avoid the attention seeking behaviour involved in puppies jumping up is to ignore them. Offer no recognition for its actions while it is jumping up. Naturally, the dog will try twice as hard to get your attention for a little while, but this will not last forever. It is the only way to avoid a pattern of bad behaviour.

Bear in mind though, you are still dealing with a puppy that needs love and attention. Reward the puppy with treats or affection when it greets you in an appropriate way, such as sitting down or walking. This way, the dog will learn what behaviour is acceptable for it and what is not. Showering love on the puppy feels only natural when it does not jump up, and both you and the dog will be happier for it.
