A dog jumping up is a major pain. Nobody enjoys being around a dog with no manners.
Unfortunately, many new dog owners encourage a jumping puppy because they think he’s “cute.” This is a big mistake.Cuteness goes away very quickly. This behavior becomes a nuisance and can be downright dangerous.Don’t wait to start using these dog obeidience tips to end this dog behavior problem.
Teach Him The “Off” Command Right Away
This is a very basic command you should teach your puppy, starting now.”Off” is a versatile command with many uses. Need to keep him off the furniture, or the kitchen countertops? Want him to stop jumping up at the door? The biggest question is, do you want him to learn not to jump on people? This command does it all.
And since it’s much easier to teach while he’s still a puppy, you need to get started right away.
Three Steps To Teaching “Off”
This is an easy command to teach:
- The second he jumps up on someone, or gets on the furniture, say “OFF!” in a commanding tone.
- Make eye contact with him, and snarl silently, showing him your teeth. He’ll recognize this silent snarl from when mama told him to knock it off. He’ll understand what you’re telling him.
- Every time he starts to jump, repeat this lesson. Soon you’ll see him trying to stop himself. Praise him to reinforce his good behavior.
All family members must use this command. If everyone in your household won’t work together, puppy training can become very difficult, if not impossible.
Stop Dog Jumping On Visitors
To prevent this problem, put your puppy on a leash before your guests arrive. If he starts to jump, step on the leash. He won’t be able to jump, while the pull from the leash reminds him not to jump.
If he still doesn’t get the message, hold onto the leash. When he jumps, say “Off!” and pull the leash to the side, forcing him to put all four feet on the ground. Be sure to pull the leash and say “Off” at the same time so he’ll learn what “Off” means. Praise him once his feet are down.
Sometimes a guest will think you’re being too hard on him. Just explain that, like a little kid, your puppy needs to learn manners while he’s young. It’s much easier to train a puppy now than to try to eradicate problem dog behaviors once he’s older.
Start Puppy Training Right Away
Don’t wait to start dog obedience lessons with your new puppy. Investing ten minutes a day, starting today, will pay off big dividends later, as he gets older.
