There are as many issues faced by dog owners as there are dogs. Some dog owners deal with excessive barking, digging and even problems with jumping up on people. The best course of action would be to stop these problems before they get a chance to develop, so train your puppy to be docile and meet your expectation with persistent bolstering when they behave correctly. A common training problem that occurs is how to stop dog chasing, as this can be hazardous to the dog and person. You might try any one of many techniques to discourage your dog from chasing things. No matter what method you choose to use to stop dog chasing you need to be consistent to get your message across.

Deterrence

One method you could use to stop dog chasing would be to disallow any outdoor time for the dog without proper supervision or a leash. Dogs that are allowed to run loose are a danger to themselves and others as they frequently stray too close to roadways. This should never be allowed. Even if you live out in the country where you feel there is little danger because there is no traffic you should be sure that you have trained your dog to remain in his own territory so that he does not go on the road and create an accident. Yard training also keeps dogs from chasing individuals that come hear his turf. Letting a dog get away with running after people and other animals is dangerous for him and those involved. You may also be creating aggression in the dog, something your really don’t want in your family pets.

When a dog is playing and chasing his master, he ought not to offer their pet any form of approval or reinforcement for that conduct. While play chasing may be fun, it does promote aggressive tendencies and reinforces the chasing behavior that you may be trying to prevent in the first place. One of the easiest ways to stop a dog from engaging in chasing behavior is to simply not run away when he begins this game. You should turn your back on the dog and refuse to grant him or her any attention when trying to engage in this behavior. After the dog calms and no longer shows this behavior, then turn around and praise the dog, giving him or her plenty of attention. You may also try using the sit command when your dog begins to try chasing behaviors on you. This my help to stop chasing behavior and reinforce a better pattern of behavior. Avoid the dog if he is engaged in an unwanted behavior and give him attention once he sits so that you are encouraging the positive behavior.
