Are you wondering how to groom a Shih Tzu and whether or not you can do it yourself?

When considering Shih Tzu grooming you have multiple styles to decide from. The choice you decide to style your Shih Tzu will depend on your resources and your dog’s character.

Some dog owners consider that the maintenance of their shih tzu’s grooming is too much bother, and they wish to keep their hair trimmed. Keeping your Shih Tzu’s hair cut is much less time consuming for the owner, but can be costly, unless you cut your dog’s hair yourself.

Daily care is necessary for the Shih Tzu whose owner has elected not to keep the coat trimmed. A steel comb or brush is recommended to groom your Shih Tzu. If the owner discovers many tangles or mats then a plastic comb can be used.

If you make your mind up you want to keep your Shih Tzu hair trimmed short, you can learn more about the “puppy cut” or “puppy trim” haircut. The puppy cut style keeps your dog cool during the hot summer months and prevents the fur from tangling.

You can take your Shih Tzu to a professional dog groomer if you do not want to cut it yourself. The cut will last nearly 4 to 6 weeks and cost more or less $30.00.

To save money, you can learn how to groom a Shih Tzu yourself by instructional videos or books. Alternative gear you will  require is first-rate set of dog trimmers. This allows you to trim your dog’s fur to one length. Ordinarily, the owner will cut the hair on the head and neck somewhat longer than the rest of the body.

The topknot hairstyle is for owners who want to keep the hair on their Shih Tzu full length. They just pull back the hair around the eyes and pin it on top of their dog’s head.

This ensures that the dog will still be able to see. Owners will regularly restrain the hair encompassing the lips as well. You may  elect to braid the hair first and then fasten it with a fastener. As you can appreciate, there are various options for the topknot.

Shih Tzu grooming style is more of the owner’s wishes. But if the Shih Tzu is elderly or sick, it is recommended that the fur be kept short and trimmed.

Remember that grooming is important as a bonding session amongst you and your Shih Tzu. The time you spend together will be leisurely and satisfying for you both.
