Grain free dog food is prescribed for canines because grains are thought to be a dangerous type of meal to feed canines. The reason for this is that dogs are not suited to digest grains as they are carnivores. Unlike humans who are omnivorous feeders, dogs are created as carnivores. This is also why their teeth are shaped aptly for chewing and tearing meat into bits and pieces but they are most likely to have some difficulty eating veggies and as well as grains. This is also the reason why feeding grains to dogs can only be made possible when the latter was cooked.
However, grains can still be fed to dogs if you feed them. You should also know that there are only certain types of grains that ought to be fed dogs if need be such as rice, wheat, and corn. All other types of grains are only digested up to 20% by dogs so that could do more harm in the long run. Also, rice becomes 100% digestible if it is cooked though the same cannot be said for either wheat or corn. The sugar extracts that is contained in grains may also be left undigested should they be ingested by dogs. This is because canines lack the salivary amylase enzyme necessary for breaking down nutrients from grains.
With all these information about grains and their likely effects on dogs, you should definitely take time ensuring that you feed your pet only grain free dog food. While cooking does turn grains more dog-friendly, that’s still not a hundred percent sure to be safe. You can easily check on the food your dogs consume especially if you buy them dog food because the nutritional value would be printed on the label-whether the food’s in a pack or a can. Make sure you read through the ingredients thoroughly. It would also be wise if you would eventually decide to stick with just a particular brand of dog food.
Being a member of an online forum can also be a good solution when it comes to finding good grain free dog food. These online forums can be very informative portals where you don’t only get to have access to stuff that you ought to feed your dogs but you also get a good grasp of other things worth knowing when it comes to pet ownership.
