THIS IS AWESOME! My favorite dog trainer and dog whisperer of all time has just released a free video online explaining how to eliminate 94% of all unwanted behavior in ANY dog. Her name is Krista Cantrell and I absolutely LOVE the way she teaches. Click on the video to watch. You'll be glad you did...

German shepherds are large dogs with quick brains. These dogs need unique training, not only to understand your desires, but also to keep them in top shape. They need to exercise not only their powerful bodies but also their agile minds.

An integral part of owning a German Shepherd is its training, but it’s important to have the right kind. The optimum training for these dogs is leash training, not rewards training, so be sure to treat your dog well and train them they way they need-and want.

German Shepherds particularly are pack animals, and they instinctively follow the organization of the pack.

When you train your German Shepherd, you need to keep that in mind, and focus yourself on acting like an alpha so that your dog will pay attention.

There are a few things it’s best to remember while you begin to train your german shepherd. The most important will be listed below:

1) The best basic obedience training for German Shepherds starts when they are eight weeks old. It’s also wise to start training them with a leash around the tenth week, after the puppy understands the basics of listening to your orders.

2) It is absolutely key to have the full attention of your German Shepherd. More than other dogs, they are quick to turn their attention elsewhere. You can stop this by keeping them on the leash and making sure that you have their undivided attention whenever you are about to start teaching them a new command.

Every time your puppy starts showing too great an interest in the cat next door or passing children, you might want to pull on the leash a bit to refocus them.

3) Make sure that you are holding the end of the leash not attached to your dog carefully at all times. You should be tightening and loosening it as your dog responds to your commands.

When your puppy is listening to you, give the leash a little slack. This will establish you as the dominant figure, as well as encouraging him to obey you.

Another reason that leash training is a high priority for your dog is because German Shepherds need to recognize you as the pack leader. If they don’t respect you as the alpha, instead of finding yourself training your dog, you might well find him training you!

However, it’s completely acceptable-and even wise-to add a bit of reward to the leash training for maximum results.
