Effective golden retriever training is the best gift an owner can offer his pet because through training, a golden retriever learns lots of things including potty training and obedience training - all these are important aspects in creating a happy and well-mannered pet. Despite the fact that the breed isn’t hard to handle considering their intelligence and gentle disposition, it’s important that they’re given right training before improper habits start to occur.
There are wide array of training strategies to select from – with the positive reinforcement as the most popular and punishment-based training as the least used method. Here are a few golden retriever training tips to help you:
1. Get to know your pet. Knowing the breed characteristics, medical issues prevalent to breed or their grooming needs is not sufficient. Even though they are of the same breed, dogs vary depending on their personality, how they are socialized as a puppy and how they react to things and scenarios around them. Therefore, your constant guidance is needed.
2. After thorough observation, you have to choose what training method best suits your pet’s personality. What is his favorite dog treat? Is he obeying commands only when a reward exists?
3. Avoid punishment or harsh training. The golden retriever is noted for being gentle, kind and friendly so meaning to say, this breed doesn’t need harsh handling in order to figure out what you’re teaching them. Physical punishment is in fact not effective so better use other golden retriever training approach like positive reinforcement.
4. Golden retrievers are widely used as disabled assistance dogs because of their even-temper and patience. But they can become bored too so training activities must be exciting and fun. It must not last longer than 20 minutes.
5. Use training tools with care. Tools like collars and leashes are potentially damaging for they can strangle or hurt your pet’s neck or throat. Read instructions carefully and if possible, ask someone who knows more about that certain tool to show you a sort of demo on proper use of that tool.
6. Training should end on a positive note. Reward your pet each time he did what is desired and set him up to win.
