You have to admit it, fleas and ticks on dogs entail a serious problem for dog owners. Even family members who may not be pet lovers can’t ignore the dog’s discomfort. As a responsible dog owner, you have to do something. You just need to get the right fleas and ticks on dogs and follow the appropriate treatment administration instruction.
What scratching does to the dog
Fleas and ticks crawl on your dog’s skin and bite. In an attempt to relieve the itch, your dog scratches and scratches hard, since his fur gets in the way. Leave this condition untreated and you’ll soon see tufts of hair all over your home. Worse, you may see raw skin red with blood on your dog, from all that scratching. It’s not uncommon to hear about dogs chewing on their skin and paws to distract themselves from the discomfort.
Consequence of all this scratching
Since dogs can’t reach some parts of their body, and the itch must be scratched, they end up on their backs, rubbing against the ground. Or on the furniture in your house. This means you may be having more to clean up, especially since the dog will be rubbing itself against the floor and the furniture – expect to see tufts of hair all over.
What solutions are available to alleviate the itch?
Spot on applications are usually recommended, even though orally taken products also work. The former is popular since it kills fleas and ticks quickly. With oral products, your dog may develop resistance to it, thus dampening or negating its effects. It’s best to consult your vet to see which medications may work well in the long run. There are also treatments that should not be given to specific breeds, condition, age, and when a dog is already undergoing some other treatment.
What preventive assistance dog owners can provide
There maybe other factors that trigger the itch, and a visit to your vet may reveal these. These could be in its food or in the environment it is often exposed to. You may want to talk to your vet about trying some all natural or hypoallergenic soaps and shampoos on your dog, in case the dog is allergic to components of some bathing products. Your vet may prescribe some specific bathing products and oral supplements for the dog’s skin problems, in addition to specific flea and tick treatments. Don’t forget to regularly clean and vacuum your house.
