There are some potential health problems that could potentially catch you and your Boxer off guard if you are not prepared for them. It can be very expensive to treat not to mention emotionally difficult if your Boxer were to become sick. Instead of waiting for problems to arise you are much better off taking a pro-active approach to your Boxer’s health.

Many of the conditions that your Boxer may suffer from are not dissimilar to conditions that affect humans, the only difference is that unlike humans who can tell you when they are feeling unwell, your Boxer cannot. Keeping a close eye on your Boxer will ensure that you pick up on any potential symptoms.
Obesity: A poor diet can contribute to obesity as can a lack of exercise. Obesity, like in humans as an isolated condition, does not usually pose any problems but the secondary issues that can arise can certainly be life threatening such as heart and liver disease. If you are worried that your Boxer is getting overweight then you should increase their exercise and reduce their calorie intake.

Arthritis: Arthritis is a common condition that can affect Boxers because of the size of the dog. Putting undue stress on your Boxer’s joints by over exercising can bring on arthritis so in order to prevent this you should make sure that your dog doesn’t overdo it especially as they get older.
Allergies: Like humans Boxers can suffer from a range of different allergies ranging from allergies to various plant pollens, food allergies and even house dust mites. If you notice your Boxer scratching excessively so that the area becomes sore or they have recurrent ear infections then these are common symptoms that may illustrate that your Boxer is allergic to something in the environment.
Consult your local Vet if you are concerned about any of the above conditions. It is worthwhile remembering that with many health issues prevention is always better than a cure!
