The belief that commercial dog food diets are complete and balanced is an assumption that many dog food owners make. You must understand that your German Shepherd has similar nutritional requirements to humans if you want to feed them your own diet because you are worried about the quality of commercial diets, which often vary enormously across different brands.

Abnormal stools and upset stomachs could become the norm for your German Shepherd if you feed them the incorrect diet, not very pleasant for anyone!
There can be a large variation in price when considering commercial dog food brands. The highest quality dog foods, depending on where you live are most often sourced from your local Vet. A poorer quality dog food may be cheaper to buy, but because of the lower quality you end up needing to feed more in order to maintain a healthy weight for your dog, so you may be better off actually buying the more expensive, higher quality diet.

You can consider a home cooked diet if you want to make sure your German Shepherd is receiving all the essential nutrients in their diet.
When preparing a home cooked diet for your dog you need to consider all the different food groups that are required. Dogs eat meat as well as some grasses and berries in the wild which means they are omnivores so you will need to feed an element of all these foods types in their diet.
The ratio you need to remember in order to include the right portions in your dog’s diet are 40% meat (beef or chicken), 30% vegetables (carrot) and 30% starch (rice or pasta). Feeding your dog too much of one food source can result in them becoming unwell.
Remember if you are preparing food at home for your dog, they don’t need anything fancy, as long as the diet is nutritionally balanced and they get regular exercise then they should remain fit and healthy!
