Dog potty training is pretty easy and usually does not take a lot of time to potty train your dog. Dog potty training requires you to devote some time and effort but with proper guidance, your dog will be correctly potty trained quickly.
Potty training should commence when your dog is still a puppy, during this period is when dogs learn at their peak, puppies learn everything they possibly can when they are still a puppy and grow up into a mature dog with the habits and behaviors it has come to learn as a puppy. That is why it’s important that you potty train your dog as early as you can. While dog potty training is in progress, accidents will be inevitable. Every so often your dog will urinate or poop somewhere inside your home particularly if it is a puppy. As a responsible dog owner you need to clean up the mess and just proceed with potty training your dog knowing that in no time your dog will be properly potty trained and these accidents will be a thing of the past.
The biggest mistake that dog owners make when dog potty training is to punish their dogs after they have found that their dog has been pooping or urinating inside the house. Some people rub their dogs face in the waste or hit their dogs, this kind of punishment does not educate your dog that it should not urinate or poop within the house. Punishing your dog could cause negative behavioral problems in your dog sooner or later, in some circumstances it leads onto dogs eating their own feces (coprophagia)!. The best way to teach your dog the place to go eliminate is to show your dog you’re happy with praises and treats when it has gone and done its business where you want it to. By using positive training, your dog will realize that if it eliminates in the selected spot it is going to please you and will encourage your dog to want to go there again next time.
Since puppies are still young and do not yet have full control over their bowels and bladders, they urinate and poop constantly! The key times when a puppy needs to go are:
* After a nap
* When waking up from sleep
* After every meal or even small snack
* After exercise or play time
These key times needs to be put into a schedule so that you can know when your dog your dog needs to sleep, eat, wake up, and have its daily walk and exercise. Having a schedule is really useful as a way to predict when you’re required to take your dog outdoors so that it may pee or poop.
When you are dog potty training you will need to select a spot outside where it’s acceptable for your dog to go to poop or urinate. Every time you’re taking your dog here, make sure that your dog is on a leash so you have got more control over what happens. After your dog has had something to eat, just woken up from sleep, or has had some training or exercise, you should take your dog outside on a leash to the chosen area where your dog will at all times go to poop or urinate. Whenever you take your dog here don’t disturb your dog at all, simply give your dog a while to explore that spot and sniff around a bit, after a short time of sniffing around your dog will urinate or poop. Immediately after your dog is done, praise your dog and reward it for doing the right thing. With practice and consistency your dog will learn to associate relieving itself on this spot with you being pleased, what this means is that your dog will know the place to go next time it needs to relieve itself. Keep in mind that this won’t occur overnight, however in due time your dog will be properly toilet trained if you put in the effort potty train your dog.
Some obvious signs your dog must go are when:
* Sniffing the ground
* Your dog is continually barking at you to get your attention
* Door scratching (particularly the door that leads out to the selected space)
* Running towards you and then back to the door continuously
In the event that you see your dog peeing or pooping in your home, do not panic or make a fuss, simply take your dog outdoors so that it may finish off and proceed with the dog potty training process. If on the way you carry your dog out and it is still peeing or pooping then it is too late and the only thing you are able to do is clean up the mess and eliminate the smell with a deodorizer because dogs tend to relieve themselves again in an spot where they can smell the scent of their waste. A great idea that many people do is to take some of your dogs waste and leave it outside where the dog usually goes to relieve itself, this will let the dog know it is where it ought to go to pee or poop.
Dog potty training tips for the older dogs:
Older dogs have already learnt some behaviors which may make it a bit more tough to potty train older dogs. What I recommend is treat it like a puppy and teach it from the start. Remember to not get angry at your dog if it pees or poops inside your house, and DO NOT a BIG DO NOT ever hit your dog or rub its face in its own waste, this can teach it to be scared of you and next time it needs to eliminate, your dog will look for a good hiding place to pee or poop at and this can make matters worse for you. Patience and persistence is essential to dog potty training and if you stick to one method and keep at it, your dog will soon be potty trained and will always know the place to go when it must pee or poop.
