Dog First Aid - Collapsing
THIS IS AWESOME!
My favorite dog trainer and dog whisperer of all time has just released a free video online explaining how to eliminate 94% of all unwanted behavior in ANY dog.
Her name is Krista Cantrell and I absolutely LOVE the way she teaches.

Dog First Aid - Collapsing
A pet owner that provided the pet with prime quality food and regular veterinary care would be stressed if the pet topples down for no apparent reason. A very active and healthy pet can suddenly fall to the ground. Collapse is a condition that occurs when the dog abruptly losses strength. A collapsing dog can totally lose consciousness. Dogs would have different fainting spells, some would only last for second, some dogs would remain in the state of collapse for a while and others would need to be revived to regain consciousness. In some dogs, collapsing would seem to have no other effect as the dog would be its usual active self. Other dogs would stay disoriented and weak after collapsing.
Dog collapse can be a life threatening condition especially if the collapsing episode is recurring. A vet consultation would be very necessary to get the true state of the dog’s health. Collapsing can indicate a nervous system, respiratory system or musculoskeletal concerns. A congenital heart disease that worsens and makes the heart weaker overtime can be the reason why the dog is collapsing. An illness may not be the reason why the dog collapses as the condition can be associated with a foreign object that blocks the dog’s airway.
Dogs form a strong attachment with the owner thus it would be understandable for a pet parent to panic at the sight of the unconscious pet. But to be able to do the necessary first aid that will help the pet, the dog owner has to stay collected and to have presence of mind. A dog owner needs to assess the pet’s condition. One of the reasons why a dog would collapse is a blocked airway thus a dog owner has to administer first aid methods that will remove the blockage. A blockage that is just at the base of the dog’s tongue can be easily removed. A foreign object that has travelled way down the trachea can be dislodged by doing the Heimlich maneuver.
A dog that collapses must be immediately seen by a vet but the owner still has to administer first aid to stabilize the pet’s condition. It would be necessary for a dog owner to check the pulse, the breathing and the temperature of the pet. The pet must be kept comfortable and covered with a blanket to maintain body temperature.
If the dog has stopped breathing, mouth to nose resuscitation has to be administered. Rescue breathing is done by holding the dog’s mouth close and breathing on the pet’s nose. This rescue breathing has to be repeated about 6 times per minute. For collapsed dogs that has no more heartbeat, compression or heart massage must be started immediately. The heart area of the dog must be firmly compressed. This procedure must be repeated 70 times per minute.
