Dog owners should be aware of the importance of grooming the pet. Promoting the health and ensuring the happiness of the pet can be achieved with a 10 to 15 minute grooming session everyday. The grooming sessions would certainly make the dog ecstatic for being with the loving owner.
One of the basic grooming routines for dogs is coat brushing as it promotes the impressive appearance of the coat and the health of the dog’s skin. Moreover, daily brushing gives the dog owner a chance to monitor the overall health condition of the pet given that the appearance of the coat and the feel of the skin and body would be an ideal indicator of the dog’s health. With regular brushing, the dog owner would have the opportunity to take note of abnormalities in the skin that start to develop like rashes or bumps and lumps. Parasite infestation that is discovered early on will be resolved at once. As with any kind of health concern, early detection would always be important to give the dog a good chance to early and full recovery.
Regular brushing is most necessary for long haired dogs as it prevents the formation of mats and tangles that will mar the appearance of the pet. But this does not mean that short coated dogs would not benefit from regular brushing. Regular brushing primarily removes the tangles and give the pet an immaculate coat but this grooming ritual also ensures the distribution of the oils that keep the skin and the fur healthy.
Different breeds of dogs would need different kinds of brushes and combs. A dog owner can accomplish the grooming routine easier and in less amount of time if the right kind tool is used. Slicker brush would do well for Doberman Pinscher, Chihuahuas, Boxers and other short and smooth coated breeds. A steel pin brush or a long widely spaced comb is ideal for long coated dogs like Shih Tzu and Maltese as it can easily remove mats and tangles.
A bench or a platform for large breeds and the countertop for small breeds would make the task of brushing the dog easier and less back breaking. Brush the hair of short haired dogs from the head to the dog’s behind making sure to follow the direction of hair growth. For long haired breeds, it would be best to loosen the tangles with the fingers before using the brush or the wide toothed comb. Be sure not to pull the hair when you run the brush through. Brush the hair on the ears, tail and feet too.
