Dog Tug Toys are at best of times a very controversial subject for various reasons. If you ask 5 different veterinarians, dog trainers and breeders what their opinion is regarding playing tug of war with your dog, you may be ready for confusion as each of them will have their own perspective.

The most concerns raised relates to the aggression of dogs and the provocation of unruly behaviour that may result from playing tug with the animal. The argument is endless as to whether the type of breed or the temperament of the individual animal or the tug play itself is to blame. However, the majority feels that the way in which you play tug with your dog is more important whether you should be playing tug of war at all.

Deep beneath the fur coat of your beloved best friend the heart and instinct of a wolf remains. It does not matter for how long we claim to have domesticated dogs, their instinct remain.

A study on playing tug with your dog was done in 2002 to establish whether or not playing tug intensified the aggression of dogs. At the end it was concluded that playing tug with your dog have no negative results on the relationship of a dog and his owner.

With that out of the way you can go an buy you and your best friend a Dog Tug Toys with peace in your heart. Before you buy, remember to keep the following advice in mind.

Make sure the Tug Dog Toys does not have any unravelled trimmings. It can result in problems if the strings catch between their teeth, especially with small dogs whose teeth are tightly close together. A good quality toy will last and will not deteriorate due to rough handling. A very important thing to note is not to allow your dog to play tug with any hose hold or clothing items. This way you teach your dog that all these things you give to play with, are permissible to use as toys in the future as well!

Pay good attention to the strength of your dog’s chewing ability. Normally larger dogs don’t chew excessively as their smaller counterparts with much sharper and finer teeth. Apart from the chewing factor, make sure to obtain a tug toy that allows you reasonable grip on the toy and not a too strong grip on your end. It might be possible for you to tug out a tooth by accident if you pull too hard on the other end.

After obtaining the right toy, you would want to take note of some pointers commonly neglected when playing tug with your dog. First and foremost, never allow your dog to hang onto the tug toy in the air. This is unhealthy for their teeth and can hurt their jaws by doing that.

Should it happen when you play tug and the dog gets aggressive or starting to act violently, drop down the toy without delay and walk away without paying attention to the dog. Also, don’t leave the tug toy laying outside all the time. Bring it out when the two of you are going to play and put it straight away once the playing is done.
