Chocolate is well known to have dangerous and potentially fatal effects on dogs. Chocolate is a favorite comfort food of humans but this food is poisonous to dogs. In dogs, ingestion of chocolates would cause accelerated heart beats and rapid pulse as the theobromine in choocolates stimulates the dog’s nervous system. A dog would be lucky if vomiting and diarrhea are the only ill effects of eating chocolates. The over stimulation of the nervous system though can cause the dog to have tremors, to seize and to die.
Not only chocolates would have ill effects on the dog as some human foods are toxic to dogs as well. Foods that are perfectly safe for humans can have toxic effects on the dog. Dog owners have to know which of the foods commonly found in an average home can poison the dog.
Dog would get lots of benefits from eating fruits. Grapes and avocados though must not be given because of its toxic effects. Because of the pet food scare, a lot of dog owners have opted to feed the pet home cooked meals. Dogs would eat just about anything thus there will be no need to enhance the flavor of the meal by adding garlic and onions. Onion and garlic can poison the dog. Ingestion of these food taste enhancers has the effect of destroying the dog’s red blood cells. Dogs that are regularly fed onions and garlic can develop anemia.
Tomatoes and potatoes must not be given to dogs because these foods have toxic substances too. The oxalate that these food contain hampers the normal functioning of the digestive and nervous systems as well as cause damage to the dog’s kidneys. Green tomatoes are most toxic but the dog must be prevented from eating the leaves or the tomato plant as doing so would cause the dog to have tremors, to seize and to suffer from heart arrhythmia.
These common human foods vary in toxicity. A dog owner may aver that he has been feeding his pet one of these toxic foods without causing any ill effects on the dog. This is not an indication that the known toxic food is not poisonous to the dog after all. Poisoning will depend on the quantity of the food ingested, the body weight of the dog and the amount of toxicity the food. It is also possible that the poison has affected the internal organs of the dogs and toxicity of this kind will not be seen easily. Foods that are listed as toxic to dogs must never be given to the pet.
Many common human foods are toxic to dogs. A more comprehensive list of foods toxic to dogs can be found at Sarah’s Dogs. Also you can read abotu dog grooming.
