One of the more effective training aids is clicker training for dogs. It is a popular method as it is pain free for your dog and it does seem to work. It uses behavioral psychology, that is reward for good behavior. The dog is rewarded with a treat for good behavior which is marked with a click .

This clicking when coupled with positive reinforcement is a powerful way and a humane way to train almost any animal. It sure beats the old ’shocker’ methods that hurt the animals. Your dog wants to please you in reality which can appear surprising. Communication is one of the main problems when dog training. Your dog will understand that attempt at communication much easier through the use of clicker training.

‘Operant conditioning is the term used. It basically means that the dog intentionally does something so as to bring about the desired ending. Dogs associate people places and objects according to a pleasure or non pleasure grading system. Its really a form of conditioning.

If good behavior is rewarded then the dog will learn that and repeat it. This conditioning is how the dog is trained. Classic training styles gives you an habitual behavior whilst this operant conditioning gives you a form of behvior with purpose. When the two come together you get a potent form of training.

There is a good reason for using the clicker sound as it is consistent whilst the human voice can change inflection and pace meaning that the dog can not always understand us.Communication again! The dog quickly learns to associate the sound of the clicker with acceptable behavior and reward.

You would think that it would be almost impossible to force some animals to adopt certain forms of behavior but clicker training has been very successful in training dolphins for example. From cats and leopards, to birds and rabbits, this method has been very successful.

The clicking should be done while the dog is actually performing the desired behavior. You should not wait until the task if finished. Give a click and a treat before the behavior and after the behavior is complete. You should click when your dog does something you would like him to repeat, that way you reinforce the message. Always use the same click but you can give different types of treats for different behavior.

By using clicker training for dogs you are communicating with your pet on a different level. You will find that your dog will begin to enjoy giving you his good behavior side as he is rewarded for it. If you punish your dog for bad behavior it may work to a point but is more likely to lead to more bad behavior. The use of positive reinforcement will lead to more positive behavior.
