The Greeks have always valued small house dogs. Alopekis are one of the small dog breeds kept by the Greek people as home companions and utilized as all around farm working dogs. These dogs that have existed in ancient Greece were considered as a dog type rather than a breed given the fact that they are strays that roam the streets. Careful breeding has resulted to the creation of a dog breed which was given the name Alopekis, taken from the word “alopecis” meaning small and foxy

An Alopekis is indeed a small dog with fox-like features and graceful movements. Similar to a fox, an Alopekis has a wedge shaped head, an elongated muzzle and erect ears. The almond or round shaped eyes colored according to the coloring of the coat shows the lively and intelligent personality of the dog. The wiry or short coat that comes in a whole array of color combination as well as the sickle shaped tail that is always carried up in an elegant curve sure give the dog an impressive appearance.

These small dogs were highly valued by the Greek people from antiquity and up to this very day. Alopekis were primarily utilized as ratters. The tenacity and the high prey drive make this foxy dog an excellent hunter of vermin. This enthusiastic worker is always ready for action. An Alopekis is a versatile dog. This dog that was originally developed to be a ratter can be trained to do various works in the farm like herding ducks, guarding the livestock and property as well as protecting poultry from foxes.

These are working dogs but an Alopekis can easily adapt to life in the city. This dog can learn tricks easily thus as a family pet it can provide hours of entertainment for the family and because of the protective instinct, it will be a dependable guard of the family. An Alopekis has a happy personality. This breed is most desired as a home companion because of its friendly, affectionate and lively personality.

An Alopekis makes an ideal home companion but this breed is not for everyone. Just as with any other small breeds, an Alopekis too has the tendency to develop Small Dog Syndrome. An Alopekis is a lovable breed but the owner has to consider the fact that the dog is not human and it needs firm handling otherwise it will become a hard to handle pet.
