THIS IS AWESOME! My favorite dog trainer and dog whisperer of all time has just released a free video online explaining how to eliminate 94% of all unwanted behavior in ANY dog. Her name is Krista Cantrell and I absolutely LOVE the way she teaches. Click on the video to watch. You'll be glad you did...

Selecting a new dog to bring into your home as a family pet is not a very simple task, you should gather various information about the breeds you can be interested in. You simply can’t base your decision on whether or not a puppy is cute. In order to be able to make the best decision for your home and family, you should know almost everything about the dog you want and its breed.

The general appearance of the fully grown dogs of this breed is important so, if you want a collie you should know the dogs of this breed are medium sized and have well proportioned bodies with heads that are of a wedge shape and very lean. Their muzzle is long and round and it tapers down to a nice black nose. You will find that the chest of the collie is deep and broad and the body of the collie is stout, muscular and stiff. As far as the length of their body, it is well in ratio to their height.

The coat of the Collie  is extensive and kind of rough in its texture. They also have the trademark mane around their chest and next, which is one of the features people look for when they are trying to determine exactly what the breed is. The future owner should also know these dogs will need more care of their coats than other breeds. They have a double coat and during Spring, when their under coat is shedding, they need extra care of their coats. Regular brushing is always needed.

They have also different types of hair, while the hair on their face are  on the short end and fairly smooth, the hair on their necks, thighs and tails are extra long. As a Collie owner, you should also notice there is different hair on the front of their legs, shorter and smoother, than on the back of their legs, where the hair is longer and denser.

When looking for a collie, you will find that there are a few different color choices. There are tri-color collies that will generally be a mix of tan, white and black markings. There are some collie’s though that will have different color variations or simply have two colors ranging anywhere from a light blonde to a darker reddish brown. Generally speaking, the tri color collies seem to be more preferred by pet lovers.

Beyond what the collie looks like, you will want to know a little about it’s health in order to determine whether or not it will be a truly good fit for your home. Collie is a generally healthy breed of dogs. Such things include, Gastric torsion, Dermatomyositis, Collie Eye Anomaly and something called grey Collie syndrome.

These dogs also need a lot of exercise. At least daily long walks are needed to keep them in good shape, both body and soul. Since the collie breed does great with children, it would be easy to get some of their exercise time in by having the kids run around the yard with the collie.

Another consideration of the collie is how well it can be trained. Generally, the happy and healthy collie is easy to train and is a very agile dog. This way, the members of your family can easily interact with the Collie, using either simple or more complex commands.
