We all desire an obedient dog, but training this obedience can be easier said than done, especially if we have no experience in the subject. In the past, the standard way to train a dog was quite different and involved handing out punishments to the dog. One such technique was kicking a dog for bad behaviour. This style of teaching obedience in your dog is only going to hurt it and make it fear humans. With a little effort though, you can train obedience in your dog in a much more positive fashion. The following is a guide to getting the best in obedience from your dog.
First of all, remember to show respect for your dog when it comes to obedience training. The best way to get your dog to listen to you is to build up a relationship with each other based on respect. The best way to do this is through a system of rewards for good behaviour, rather than punishments for bad behaviour. In doing this you can develop good habits in your dog, while simultaneously avoiding the negative effects of punishment. Utilizing a system of rewards and respect can really make your dog a man’s best friend!
Be sure to build up a daily routine when training obedience in your dog. Dogs respond well to repetition and routine when they are learning. This is particularly important when toilet training your dog. Punishments will not be effective - instead, simply lead the dog outside every time they make a mess. This will build up a response where going outside is a natural part of going to the toilet. Maintaining the same routine is important - otherwise you can upset the dog. The best way to make sure your dog learns the obedience you are teaching is to maintain the same routine until it sinks in.
Changing your training method is only likely to confuse the dog and make them forget everything.
It is well established that dogs can tell the emotions of the people around them. If you are annoyed with your dog, it will show. The best way, then, to go about your dog’s obedience training is to be positive. Your positivity will be reflected in your dog’s responses. It is important to avoid being negative - it is sure to mean a dog less eager to learn.
All this aside, penalties can still be important. Although harsh punishments and cruelty are unnecessary and pointless, punishing your dog still has a place. Try simply reminding your dog that it is you that is in charge rather than it. Take control and do not allow your dog to take over. This will make sure your dog does not get too cheeky and remembers just who is in charge here!
Following this simple advice is sure to give you a happier, healthier and more obedient dog.
