What is clicker training?- dog training
THIS IS AWESOME!
My favorite dog trainer and dog whisperer of all time has just released a free video online explaining how to eliminate 94% of all unwanted behavior in ANY dog.
Her name is Krista Cantrell and I absolutely LOVE the way she teaches.
Click on the video to watch. You'll be glad you did...

What is clicker training? Clicker training is a way of training animals in which desirable behavior is marked with a sound maker and then reinforced, making the behavior more likely to happen in the future. Who can use clicker training? People of all ages! What animals can be clicker trained? All animals, young or old. All species and breeds, small or large. Clicker training creates strong reliable behaviors, and is a great way of modifying behavior- solving shyness, reactivity and aggression. It is also a ethical way to bond with your companion animal as you train the animal to want to do what you want them to do, rather than physically or psychologically intimidating the animal to do what you want.

Fantastic video …
Fantastic video Emily! Love the Fawkes clip too!
@cybertourniquet …
@cybertourniquet You would not reward if it did not comply with your request. Also, you should take a step back and try and figure out why the dog didn’t comply, most of the time, its simply the human thinking the dog knows som’thing when they don’t really have it generalized yet. Honestly, since switching to the clicker method, I have not run into any “stubborn” dogs. I think other methods can create conflict which in turn creates a “stubborn”dog. My dogs want nothing more than to do what I ask
Emily - fantastic …
Emily - fantastic video! Thank you so much for including footage of Chase. You have been such an inspiration to me. You shaped my training with your wonderful tutorials and your creative, hands off training. You taught me to imagine the possibilities. Thank you! Clicker training really has changed my life.
i just got my dog …
and currently learning to lay down on one command. im not saying that clicker training is bad in anyway but i find it much more understandable then clicker training.
i just got my dog around this September, and without a clicker and she learned to sit, stay, jump, go to the bathroom on command( wee when she finds a spot
Thank you Emily! …
Thank you Emily! I’ll be sharing the video too on my facebook page and using it as a great reference tool!
@cybertourniquet …
@cybertourniquet actually, I have not encountered “stubborn phases” in clicker trained dogs, because you don’t create conflict with them. I have a client whose dog used to attack her and bite her when ‘conflict’ was created during training, but when she started clicker training she didnt need to create conflict- “do it or else”, and so now 6 months later… her dog is a very reliable therapy dog! also great with other dogs/small dogs, people and babies.
@cybertourniquet ” …
@cybertourniquet “No” can definitely be punishment to some dogs (like mine), especially if it’s said in a mean/growly tone of voice, and can turn them off training which we think should be a fun experience. Instead of correcting them we ignore their mistakes and focus on what they do right. They learn what is a mistake by what never gets rewarded.
This isn’t so bad. It makes me feel very good to praise my dog in a way that’s meaningful to her. It means we are both doing something right. : )
Excellent video!!!

Excellent video!!!
Also really nice that others let you use their clips and that you put links to go check them out.
sometimes you can …
sometimes you can never rule out “rewards” they are always there whether you like it or not- like walking forwards- if the dog works for you for the reward of getting to move forwards… you can never remove the reward once the dog “knows” the behavior. Think about a retrieve. Most dogs love doing it, if you train dogs to ‘enjoy’ a behavior, the behavior becomes reinforcing in itself. My silly dog thinks Nail Trimming is a reward even when I have no treats or toys.
@cybertourniquet …
@cybertourniquet Clicker trainers just train through the teenager phase, treating it like any other training challenge. Set them up to succeed by convincing them that you really do have something that is worth their while (this may mean upping the amount and/or quality of rewards), or it might mean limiting their freedom for a little while, or going back a few steps in training and reteaching them especially around distractions. Clicker trainers don’t really focus on the dog’s “stubbornness”.
@cybertourniquet …
@cybertourniquet yep, it works for all animals and all dogs. The military train dogs and cats to work miles away from their owners “obeying” orders through an implanted radio in their ears working for hours at a time- they do this training without using corrections. The navy also trains dolphins etc to carry out complex missions where lives are at stake without corrections.
@cybertourniquet Is …
@cybertourniquet Is your dog also in the “teenage years”? This is common if they are..when they simply do not do what you ask you ignore it and do not reinforce or say no..in clicker training there is no such thing as ah ah or no..either your dog has associated something bad with what you are asking so you can try reteaching it with a new command, or try very very very reinforcing rewards. good luck
What a great video! …
What a great video! Thanks so much for sharing!
@kgreej I wanna …
@kgreej I wanna know what clicker trainer do when the dog is in the stubborn phase. When the dog know what to do but they wont do it because they want to challenge you. I say stubborn phase.. yes.. I see a lot of dogs have that phase in their life.. it’s like “I won’t do it, what u gonna do…”. does clicker trainer keep clicking and rewarding dog in that phase?
Does the word “No” means correction?
WOW, thanks for …
WOW, thanks for sharing this awesome video! I love your work!
Loving Sparky’s …
Loving Sparky’s handstands! Great vid as always, Emily. Thank you!!
@cybertourniquet …
@cybertourniquet When the dog truly knows the command you progress to a variable ratio schedule, like you are a slot machine. This also creates more drive.
Emily definitely has, look at her videos, so have countless other trainers (search yolle555’s videos).
Yep.
Research Sheila Booth–she’s gotten one of the highest Schutzhund scores ever, with positive training.
Certainly it gets more difficult, as with any method, but it can absolutely be done. There are tonnes of videos of teenage dogs.

PERFECT timing!!! My rescue dog comes home tomorrow, and I already have my clicker and my ‘awesome’ treats (not sure what she will think is awesome, so have a few to try.) Thank you!!!

Clicker training is …
Clicker training is awesome. I just used it with a client yesterday to help her puppy approach things he was afraid of and sniff it. It was great to watch because at the end of the session he was bolting to the object, rubbing it, touching it sniffing it JUST to get the click and treat.
Excellent video, …
There is so much great information in it. I love the video of Splash, Kiko, and Tug crossing their paws in synch!
Excellent video, Emily!
Thank you also for including Nana and Kai in the video.
