Kikos Kitchen Nightmares!- Training your dog to get over their fears clicker training
THIS IS AWESOME!
My favorite dog trainer and dog whisperer of all time has just released a free video online explaining how to eliminate 94% of all unwanted behavior in ANY dog.
Her name is Krista Cantrell and I absolutely LOVE the way she teaches.
Click on the video to watch. You'll be glad you did...

This video is a how to on how to change your dogs emotional response to something they are frightened of. The example in the video is my dog Kiko who suddenly became fearful of crossing the kitchen floor. Common issues with dogs can be- shiny floors, stairs, man hole covers, grates, metal, wet grass, a crate they had a bad experience in… the list goes on. This same technique can be used in all those situations.

@MeekaLynn1968 Mine had a thing with water - he wouldn’t walk through puddles but just seemed to grow out of it and now it’s hard to keep him out of water! If still young perhaps yours will be the same. I didn’t make a deal out of it and I guess he figured if I wasn’t worried then there was no problem…not sure, but he’s fine now. I don’t know if your dog has an even bigger problem but I hope he gets over his fear and is soon enjoying swimming in ponds and paddling rivers too

This was also a nice one, Emily.

emily, i loved that video. And I’m glad kiko isn’t scared of the kitchen anymore. Good work. Is splash scared of anything??
First Id like to …
First Id like to say thank you Kikopup for the videos. Theyre very informative. Also Ive been seeing a lot of comments around youtube, people saying the clicker is too loud. Well Im in the midst of getting a puppy and Ive already gotten a clicker from amazon called i-click. Its a new design made specifically to give off a quieter click than other clickers. I thought I would share just in case anyone wants one or hasnt heard of it they can check it out. Just go to amazon and search i-click.

Whenever I train my dog she tends to get distracted by the treats in the bag, or the bunch of treats that i’m holding in my hand, what should I do?

@JDurbie
When I first started working with the clicker I with my hand in my pocket so the sound wasn’t that loud. Maybe you could try that, removing your hand just a little bit more from the pocket when she reacts good. Good luck!

My new puppy …
My new puppy doesn’t like wet grass either… We are working on it!
Actually I did do …
Actually I did do that, but there was so much footage I edited it out. I also used her mat and put it down on the scary area as a trick to speeding up the process. I think it depends on the dog regarding throwing the treat away, if it works do it, if it doesnt try something else. I found with Kiko it didnt work well, because moving fast over the floor made her nervous. She started hanging back to where the treats were being thrown too. So I stopped quickly
Sadly I think …
Sadly I think Splash might be part of the reason Kiko is nervous in the kitchen in the first place. Sometimes Splash runs through the kitchen and Kiko goes scuttling and slipping and sliding to get of the kitchen when Splash is in there. But many times I use the dog that is not scared of something to show the other its ok.
@JDurbie That is …
@JDurbie That is really horrible, but sadly clickers are made to be super loud. I don’t know why! Check out the beginning of Dogmantics Episode 1, it shows you how you can put poster tack on the dimple of the clicker to make it sound very quiet. Then you can start over. Perhaps click the dog from far away and toss the treat while the sound is barely audible, then decrease distance.
Do you ever toss …
Do you ever toss the food away from the scary area to use the “relief” as a reinforcement as well? Why/Why not?
what do you do if …
what do you do if your dog is afraid of the clicker? i just bought a clicker and my australian sheperd acts very uncomfortable and scared when i try and train her with it. given, i’m only just starting to train her to associate the sound of the clicker with treats, but i feel like this could be problematic both because she didn’t even act enthusiastic about her treats, and because she is scared of noises like that of the clicker.
